I met Sharon Stone in 1984. She and Richard Chamberlain were in Harare, Zimbabwe, making “King Solomon’s Mines.” She was really hot 26 years ago. They came by the Marine House one Sunday afternoon. Chamberlain and I were selected to be judges in a chili cookoff.

I met a couple of those guys back in the day. They belonged to the Rhodesian Light Infantry. The were associated with D Squadron of 22 SAS. Guy told me that for their “final exam,” they rode an Alouette or a Puma chopper deep into the bush. They were given nine days to make it back to HQS with only what they could carry. If they made it back, they were awarded their badges. I read about one candidate who was gored by an elephant, yet made it back to Salisbury. Before he reported to HQS for medical attention, he stopped off at a pub for a pint of beer.

My late dad was a Marine from 1943 to 1965. In WWII, he said his job was to sneak onto enemy-held islands in a rubber raft (usually from a submarine) and set-up the commo for the incoming invasion units, while the Navy frogmen took sand & soil samples and did a recon.
