Brush and tire fire draws 7 departments to New Caney
Houston Chronicle ^ | Oct. 17, 2010 | Staff

The largest brush and tire fire in a decade has drawn crews from six Montgomery County fire departments and the Texas Forest Service to about 20 acres of land in the New Caney area.

The Courier of Montgomery County reports that the New Caney Fire Department arrived at the scene about 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the 48000 block of FM 1485. Firefighters contained the blaze late Saturday night, but expected it to continue burning Sunday.

“The area was filled with ravines and sand with holes of eight to 10 feet deep,” New Caney Assistant Fire Chief Josh Smith told The Courier. “There are thousands of tires. The owners were saying that they were going to start a go-cart track.”

Firefighters from Needham, Huffman, Porter, River Plantation, Splendora and New Caney got water from the San Jacinto River because no fire hydrants were in the area, The Courier reported.

Here's another link to a report on the story.

I was looking for this to make the local news.
I drove past this mess on the way to a fish fry yesterday,
it's about two miles from the house, just past the first river crossing.

Always the intrepid photographer of course a got a couple of pictures.

And one from the store:

The road was shut down until 11:30, I had to go to a bar and wait.

Speculation at the fish fry was wild. Houses and meth labs don't burn for that long.

There was still smoke all over the woods this morning.

I had already read an I-witless report.

Speaking of which, sort of.. an old guy at the store claimed
an explosion preceded the fire. Who knows? Maybe some fools
were out here blowing stuff up or playing around with propane tanks.

I'm told it happens.

Massive tire fire! That must have smelled really bad. Interesting Fish fry you must had Gunner... :)
There were some fires in NC and the great dismal swamp a few years ago and the smoke blew and stunk up where I live in hampton roads for weeks. But I bet yours smelled a lot worse! :)

Not so bad really.
It was mostly windless for the past couple days.

There was a miasma of smoke over everything this morning
but it cleared away well before noon. It didn’t smell like
tires, though. Wood smoke mostly.

I may take a hike over to the fire site and see what is to be seen.

Just because.

Stop messing with Cletus Funk.
He’s on the city council in New Caney.

Presides over two trailer parks and a Chevron, I’ll tell you what.

Used to be a bingo hall too but it burned down.

You lucky person. When we had those forest fires a while back you would have thought they would smell like burnt wood but the darn smoke smelled like tires. It's not fair.

I’ve been told the smoke is a lot worse when Eaker is grilling your steaks.

You never seem to take the hint though.

TheMom is planning to severely overcook a turkey for Thanksgiving too. She is going to put it in the oven tomorrow.

There's supposed to be a hint?

Hell, all these years I thought it was just general incompetence.

Haven't you ever noticed that MY steaks are always perfectly cooked, blood rare and it is just yours that have to be cooked until they attain a silver dollar's dimensions?

I'm putting in my steak order now.

1. Just quickly wave it over the grill once.....before you light the charcoal.

2. Throw it on the plate.

If it's not still mooing, it's overdone.
