A woman died of blood poisoning two days after having her tongue pierced as a birthday treat, an inquest was told on Thursday.
Amanda Taylor wanted the stud so she could look like royal Zara Phillips and pop star Pink, her family said. The 34-year-old collapsed within 48 hours of having the 2cm (0.8in) steel bar put through her tongue.
Just before she died, she wrote on Facebook: I feel like crap.
Before yesterdays hearing, Miss Taylors mother Lorraine, 61, said: I was against [the piercing] and Amanda never did anything unless she had my blessing.
But her friend was having it done too so I said: Youre going to be 34 Ill give you my blessing but Im still not 100 per cent happy.
Were a very close family. If Id said no, she wouldnt have done it. I wish I said no. Miss Taylor visited Silverhand Jewellery in Cardiff in April to have the stud put in.
The next day, her tongue was swollen and she had a sore throat, the inquest heard.
The care worker was prescribed penicillin for suspected tonsillitis but later died at home from septicaemia and acute tonsillitis.
Police and public health officials found unhygienic practices at Silverhand Jewellery, the hearing was told. But tests failed to link bacteria at the parlour with the infection.
Miss Taylor, of Caerphilly in south Wales, died because bacteria entered her blood through the piercing, said deputy Gwent coroner Liz James, recording a verdict of death by natural causes.
Silverhand Jewellery said it had followed stringent hygiene procedures.
Sounds Dam* Scary!
It ain’t bean bag. When you see a perirectal fistula swollen with a cup of pus, red, swollen, and so painful I have seen truckdrivers brought to tears. Then you stab the abcess with a scalpel and outpours a cup of greenish-yellow, blood mixed pus that has an odor that would gag a maggot...then you’t know what I am talking about. But once that abcess is relieved of pressure you are so happy until I come in and tell you this will probably recur until the fistula is completely excised....another surgery...at least one. And people invite these fistulae by doing these body piercings. It is not rational.
I made it though 6 years in the Navy without a single tattoo.
I just don’t understand the allure of markings
And some women can't wear nose rings unless their noses are pierced, too.
I do not know why anyone would get pierced other than in the ears. Anywhere else, and there is such a risk of infection or nerve damage... are people not aware of those risks?
And those piercings look ugly, as well.
Fistula. Now that’s a cool word. You say.it with the right emphasis and it actually sounds like what it is—nasty.
Stupid is as Stupid does....
That's taking it a bit too far!
I have read before that a tongue piercing is the most dangerous one to get. Very high rate of infection.
“But her friend was having it done too so I said: Youre going to be 34 Ill give you my blessing but Im still not 100 per cent happy. “
The age old saying “If your friend was gonna jump off a bridge would you?”
Another parent not being a parent. Should’ve said you’re going to be 34, you should be smarter by now.
Interesting ping.
Sad.
I took mine out a couple of days after I got it...Everything healed up, you can’t even tell I had one. :-)
