Readout of President Obamas Briefing with DHS Secretary Napolitano and TSA Administrator Pistole on Transportation Security
President Obama today met with DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano and TSA Administrator John S. Pistole to review the many enhancements that have been made to both aviation and surface transportation security. Todays briefing was held in conjunction with the Presidents regularly scheduled counterterrorism and homeland security briefing and was not prompted by any specific or credible threat.
The President was briefed on DHS strategic plans, including near-term efforts to improve security and minimize risk with a focus on mass transit and passenger rail security. A significant aspect of TSAs security enhancements over the past year have included improved technology and procedures, strengthened partnerships with transportation stakeholders and expanded engagement with the international community.
The President stressed that DHS emphasis on mass transit and passenger rail security measures is a priority and again asked Secretary Napolitano and Administrator Pistole if they need anything.

Statement by Secretary Napolitano
I commend the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for adopting todays Declaration on Aviation Security, which forges a historic new foundation for aviation security that will better protect the entire global aviation system from evolving terrorist threats. Following the attempted Dec. 25 terrorist attack, at the Presidents direction, the Department of Homeland Security has worked with ICAO and our international partnersincluding representatives from the private sector ranging from airline CEOs to airport authorities to aviation industry trade associationsat five regional aviation security summits on five continents in an unprecedented effort to strengthen international aviation security. The extraordinary global collaboration demonstrated by the nearly 190 ICAO countries during the ICAO General Assembly in Montreal has helped to bring about a truly 21st century international aviation security framework that will make air travel safer and more secure than ever before.
