What/which key unlocks gas cap on 1996 Chevy Caprice (vanity)

I need to put gas in my dad's 1996 Chevy Caprice. He's in the hospital for a short stay. My brother drove my dad's car and tried to put gas in the car but could not figure out how to unlock the cap. We tried the ignition and trunk keys, and have not seen another special Chevy key for the gas cap. My dad (he's 88) is on meds that make him a little goofy so he can't tell us how to do it.

I am logged in; my beber is on stune; my sister gave the moose the cheese; and I'll go shower.

WHAT key unlocks the blasted gas cap?

Why, the gas cap key, of course.

Why yes, I am a jerk...why do you ask?

Chevy didn’t supply the locking gas cap. It’s an aftermarket item.
The key would be smaller than an ignition key.

Okay guys....Obviously daddy doesn't want you hot rodding around in his car otherwise one of you clowns would know how he does it.

Park it!! And don't be surprised if dad cuts you out of the will.

Try zipping into your friendly neighborhood auto parts store. They’ll likely as not be able to help you out.

This goes back a few years, but then again, so does your car.

These locks are not all that finicky. I have successfully used a variety of keys to open this type of lock. The keys have to be of the proper size, but you may be able to use a smaller key of about 3/4 inch length by 1/4 inch in width.

You may also be able to defeat the lock with a small flat screwdriver.

Then again, there is always a locksmith for $60.00 an hour or so.

LOL! It should look like a padlock key! It would normally be on HIS key ring, and probably not on a spare key set. Check the glove box or ash tray if you can't find the key on the ring.

If you can't find a key, you can get a replacement cap (before you destroy the old one) at Pep Boys or Auto Zone.

You mean that you have had it since ‘96 and only now have to put gas in it. Does it have one of those “secret” carburetors?

I had a 1967 Dodge truck that had 3 gas tanks. Two of them had locks which were aftermarket and this was during the '70s when some crooks liked to siphon off gas from your vehicle. I always kept my gas lock keys on the same key chain as my ignition key.

If this doesn't help, you could try a screwdriver, but be careful how much vodka you put into the drink.

Acetylene torch should do the trick. Make sure to have a soft spot to land.

Look for a key that says “Fuel” on it or get the numbers off of the cap and look for a key with the same number.

That’s not stock Chevy. They offered one over the counter as dealer add on. I used to be able to open the older ones with a screwdriver. This will ruin it in most cases but if you need to get in who cares. You could also go to the auto parts store and find the same cap and use the key for that one. They usually were the same key for same brand of cap.

Glad that one didn’t get junked in the Cash for Clunkers. That LT1 350 is awesome and they drive super nice for full frame sedan. If it is the wagon, they only made 200 of them and you really have something.

I bet it’s in his wallet because the key and money go together...that’s how us old people think...right next to that round thing in the little plastic package.
