I think you are correct about that. "Yellow Dog Democrat" wasn't making sense to me until I saw your comment.

Back in the 1980’s, Hughes Rudd of CBS/ABC did call conservative democrats “Yellow Dogs.” I believe he did recount the etymology of the term — however I thought it was clear that he was referring their ideology, and not that Reagan’s victory over Carter was so overwhelming that even the democrats who would have never voted Republican voted for Reagan.

By the 1990’s they were called “Blue Dogs.” I took the blues to be a somewhat more moderate version of the yellows.

I thought there was a modern art painting of the name “Blue Dog(s)” around that time.
