Kerry M. Kriger wants to make Santa Cruz County the most frog-friendly county on the planet.
The county is home to three endangered amphibians, including the California red-legged frog.
"I definitely want our community to understand the importance of amphibians," he said. "We have some important Santa Cruz-based projects that we're working on, and we'll need a lot of community participation."
Kriger - founder and executive director of Save the Frogs, a nonprofit dedicated to protecting amphibian populations and "promoting a society that respects and appreciates nature and wildlife" - will speak at the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum today, as part of his ongoing campaign to educate the masses about the plight of amphibians like habitat destruction, infectious diseases, pollution, invasive species, climate change and over-harvesting. Kriger will also cover related natural history facts, the differences between reptiles and amphibians and demonstrate frog calls.
After founding Save the Frogs in 2008, Kriger moved to Santa Cruz in April, and has spoken to about 30 groups. While Kriger is the only official staff member of Save the Frogs he has an estimated 20 volunteers, including scientists, educators, naturalists and students from both UCSC and Cabrillo College, and more than 15,000 people on his mailing list, he said.
