Japan is a minor league. It’s only MLB that counts. I agree leadoff hitters are supposed to get on base, and score runs. Their function is simpler and less demanding than a number 3 hitter, who is supposed to do everything a leadoff does, plus produce runs. The best leadoff hitter of all time is definitely Rickey Henderson. He scored more runs, stole more bases, drew more walks, hit more homers than any leadoff hitter. He’s top dog in that dept.
Yes! Go Braves!
Yes! Go Braves!
DH isn’t a position. There have been other players who spent a lot of time at DH who did as well as Edgar—Frank Thomas comes to mind. David Ortiz. It’s silly to call the DH a position. It’s a spot in the batting order for people who can’t play the field. A permanent DH is a liability, really. It gives the manager much less flexibility. He can’t spell his more valuable position players by giving them a day at DH. He can’t juggle his defensive alignment based on the situation. He has to put the guy who can’t field in the spot in the lineup everyday. If you are gonna be that guy, you’d better hit!
Rickey Henderson career OBP .401 !
Ichiro: .376
Rickey RUNS : 2295 (first all time, avg'd 121 per season.
Ichiro: 1047, avg 107 per season
So, we've established that while Ichiro is a prolific singles hitter, he's not the best hitter ever, not even the best leadoff hitter ever.
I saw them clinch the division in 2000 (IIRC) and that was awesome, the place went nuts.
Go Cardinals!
What?
Oh....
Henderson, with his combination of speed and power, is the best leadoff hitter in the history of the game. This from a fan who watched Hall of Famer Lou Brock lead off for the St. Louis Cardinals for a decade.
Well the good thing is that the NLCS will not be on TBS so we have have to see their jumpy digital picture.
I cant stand TBS’s jumpy digital picture. Its practically unwatchable.
