Recently, I was considering becoming a member of the Libertarian Party. I admit I knew little about the party, except that they are for smaller government. I visited their website, and this is what I found...
The party's views of gay unions and abortion are as follows;
"Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government's treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships."
"Recognizing that abortion is a sensitive issue and that people can hold good-faith views on all sides, we believe that government should be kept out of the matter, leaving the question to each person for their conscientious consideration."
I know that there are many libertarians here on FR, and I would appreciate it if they weighed in. How can you affiliate yourselves with a party that at least appears to disagree with many basic conservative principles?
So you base your morals on the Founding Fathers? I admire them as much as the next Patriot, but I certainly wouldn't base my moral code off of them. Do you pick and choose which one you hold "most high" as Magnus Deux? With maybe Franklin and Jefferson's dalliances ignored?
You are dodging the question. That's fine. I rarely expect honesty on the internet and am rarely disappointed.
The 38 states banning homosexual marriage was in response to state governments and courts making rulings, not the other way around.
No. I have based this debate on history and the Founders.
You are dodging the question. That's fine. I rarely expect honesty on the internet and am rarely disappointed.
You have no right to demand anything.
I’m going to join the libertarians the moment “conservatives” nominate a leftwing turd like Romney.
Still can't comprehend that can you...
IOW... You have no basis for your morals. At least none you are willing to articulate.
You have no right to demand anything.
Only as much as you do. Nor did I "demand" anything, I just pointed out your duplicity.
Evidently you are an idiot, that is a little fringe libertarian group that does not represent libertarianism nor the Libertarian Party.
This debate is about equal rights for homosexuals. They have the same rights as everyone else. You keep trying to take the debate in a different direction.
Only as much as you do. Nor did I "demand" anything, I just pointed out your duplicity.
There is no duplicity. You want to refocus the debate. I won't fall for it.
This is about homosexuals already having the same rights as everyone else.
Well, then let me be a little clearer. I'm not going to let your juvenile badgering suck me into answering a loaded question. If I say we go with that list, you make that an implicit admission that you are right. If I say no, you will charactize it as saying we should support the opposite of those things. The question of where the legitimate government authority to address it gets sidestepped. Heads, you win. Tails, I lose.
Given the opportunity for honest debate you throw it away and opt for cheap trickery and deceit.
If you hand me a loaded question I will do my best to unload it, take it apart and hand it back to you in pieces without pulling the trigger.
If you don't want that done with them, don't hand them to me.
Refusing to condemn that list is a clear enough answer.
Way to go little jeremiah, you nailed it with that post.
Yes, indeed. Way to go there. High fives and congratulations all around! You’ve demonstrated exactly why sophists have historically been held in such high regard.
We aren't. Never have been.
It's you guys trying to bring your "I hate gays" baggage into the debate. I'm not gay. I never plan on being gay. My wife and kids stand as testimony to that.
However, the one thing I really can't stand is those who decry the Left's use of bigger government when all they are really pissed off about is that they aren't holding the Federal whip hand.
Sorry, but you utterly fail to make a logical case for much of anything.
This thread has gotten circular. Good night little carrot...

Apparently FR is now a pro-sodomy, pro-anarchy, pro-child sexuality promoting, pro-drugs, pro-homosexual agenda website.
You chose not to disagree with that, does that list meet with your approval?

Of course, logic tends to confuse people like you. Sorry about that.
Nope. You simply can't debate. I only mentioned state laws. You constantly harped on federal law and the Constitution. And I know about your wife and kids since you know my kids.
Good night.
Why do you need to make childish personal insults in every post, don’t your posts stand on their own?
That is nice that the libertarians have a little fringe group, like conservatives have some of the libertarians, but it doesn’t change anything about libertarians, or libertarianism, you should start another thread on that little sub group.
I also bet that little group fully supports the homosexual agenda and the rest of the radical leftist, libertarian agenda.
Self-governing constitutional republics, and ideas like "consent of the governed" sometimes escape the conceptually challenged. Absolutes are easier to embrace. They free you from the burden of thought.
