How does that compare with the modern “Bram Stokers’ Dracula”?
I’m slowly reading the original and it’s more out there than I expected.

. “ although it used to be on TV rather frequently.”
Yes, Carnival of Souls used to be on TV A LOT when I was a teenager way back in the ‘60s and early ‘70s. I think it used to play on the old Zacherley’s Chiller Theater program on WPIX (here in NY). Glad you thought of it as well.

“old Saltair, UT resort looked absolutely foreboding in the evening.”
I never realized that “Carnival of Souls” was filmed there. I think there was a show on the Travel channel last year that highlighted abandoned resorts. Evidently this one still had people living there. Interesting. Thanks.

One obscure but excellent horror movie is Vampyr - Der Traum des Allan Grey. It is not gory, but very unsettling. One of my favorites.

I’ve seen both versions. The original one from about 1932 was much more terrifying. I also read Stoker’s novel, and like the movie, it made my hair stand on end, and I was all goose bumps. I couldn’t even sleep without a night light and I was in my 40s. Stephen King’s “Salem’s Lot” was pretty scary as well.

Try this one. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0068230/ Asylum (1972)

It's a Robert Bloch story, the same guy who wrote Psycho and “The House That Dripped Blood”.

Each of the four vignettes is a parodying of a famous science fiction or fantasy author, but you do NOT have to know or understand that to enjoy it; if you DO recognize them, then it becomes hilarious, and the rest of the audience thinks you're a maniac for laughing when they scream.

Also, each of the vignettes is part of an overall story that ties the beginning to the ending.

It is old enough that not too many will have seen it.

Also, the Haunting (of Hill House) 1963, not the 1999 remake. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057129/ This is a well made film which has some truly scary scenes in it, but is not a chop & hack, blood & guts kind of movie.

That would be “TRILOGY OF TERROR” with Karen Black, this film was produced and directed by Dan Curtis, the same guy who gave us the “DARK SHADOWS” afternoon tv soap.

“TRILOGY OF TERROR” is a movie, with 3 separate stories, Karen Black plays a different character in each story.. the LAST story relates how the ancient Witch Doctor “HUNTER” doll, goes after Karen with a vengeance, after the protective necklace falls off the dolls neck. The final scene will more than surprise you. This last story in this movie is a classic! WELL WORTH watching this last story!

I first saw “TRILOGY OF TERRROR” in the middle ‘70’s (It’s a made for tv film) I’ve never forgotten that last scene~! It IS available on DVD.

Haven’t seen this one mentioned by anyone but “The Hills Have Eyes” the original one made back in the 80’s was one hell of a suspensfull and scary flick. After all these years it still sticks in my head.

Nope. The Thing remake destroys the original in every way.
