Have you seen John Carpenter’s The Thing?

Have you seen Carpenter's Dark Star? I have never laughed so hard in my life. I loved the beach-ball alien!

Stick to B&W from the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. There are some real gems, but not the graphic horror of the modern crop of films. Personally, I watch ‘The Thing’ by Howard Hawks annually - freaked me as a kid and never fails to give great period feeling.

I posted the wrong title in a early reply. A good vampire movie is “Near Dark” not “After Dark. Also “The Uninvited” original ghost movie from 1944. Scary black and white film. Also some old Twilight Zone episodes are well done and scary. One episode has a an old woman getting phone calls from her long dead husband. She visits his grave to find the telephone line has been blown down and landed on his grave.

Wasn’t crazy about Pan’s Labyrinth. Well done, but far less of the weirdness promised (you see almost all of it in the trailer).

The one thing that bothered me was the demonization of the Nationalists, while portraying the Communists as saints during the Spanish Civil War.

My mistake. The movie title is Sole Survivor! Spelling counts when looking up these movies!

“Cube” - scary, smart, ultra low budget

The most terrifying movie I’ve ever seen was the original “Dracula,” with Bela Lugosi. There were scenes in that flick that even today, after more than 50 years, make my blood run cold.

I agree, I saw the original Dracula not long ago and was surprised just how good it was. Also had a bit of humor in it, just enough.

On the other hand, I also saw the original Frankenstein, actually it probably wasn’t the first one but the one with Boris Karloff and it was OK but not quite as good as I remembered.
