I feel bad for the guy, and wish the paramedics had tried harder. But, if citizens have no expectation of life-or-death protection from police, as the courts have held, why should they expect a higher enforceable standard from state run ambulance and paramedics? Just askin’.

The best way to protect the public from these lawsuits is to not provide ambulance service.

In this case, it’s not whether the city is going to pay; it’s how much.

The city fired the medic and that can easily be construed as an admission of liability; or the city could argue that the medic violated clear city policy by not going to the victim in order to argue that only the medic should be liable. The problem for the city is the number of calls to 911 over a period of 30 hours.

The family is going to win this one and despite their claim that they are going to do right by his girlfriend, she’ll be lucky to see a dime.

IIRC there was a lot of discussion here on FR at the time when the news reports first hit. Did no one in the neighborhood have a toboggan? What were the actions of the family aside from calling 9-1-1?
