New York to replace 250,000 street signs

NEW YORK, - New York officials said it will cost about $27.5 million to replace all of the city's street signs to conform to national standards.

The New York City Department of Transportation said the signs, which feature street names in all capital letters, will be replaced with signs featuring both capital and lower-case letters and they will be printed in a font called Clearview, the New York Daily News reported Thursday.

The Federal Highway Administration said the new sign standards improve safety because they allow drivers to identify words more quickly, allowing them to swiftly bring their eyes back to the road.

The Transportation Department said it expects to have 11,000 of its 250,000 street signs replaced by the end of the year. Officials said the task should be fully completed by 2018.

Why does a piece of tin with paint on it cost $110?

“to conform to national standards”

For a minute there, I thought I’d read the signs would have to be in English and Spanish.

Re: reading signs, here’s my $0.02...

I was driving through Ojai, CA for the first time last weekend. We got there at night and were trying to find the street that would take us to our destination.

I couldn’t read the street names.

Why?

The signs were a dark, almost redwood color, the names were routered into the wood and appeared to be painted black.

I was just going to post that. No one who drives in Manhattan even thinks to worry about what is written on those signs. People in the borough who have a car know exactly where they are going without the use of street signs and everyone else, including tourists, either walk, take taxis, use the subway, or ride the bus.

More big govt meddling. Can’t stand diversity in street signs, light bulbs, ... x-ray vans spying on you as you sit on the potty or other intimate moments.

We are prisoners of the people we elected and the unaccountable appointees and the overpaid bureaucrats who have dumbed down education with forced social experiments that leave less time for the tough courses which are prerequisites to higher learning.

This election has to take out the trash, de-Czar and de-alphabet the government and restore all the rights we had. I don’t hear enough from the Republicans about all the things that matter.

The Russians got rid of their Czar their way. The ballot with follow through by the elected must get rid of our Czars. Aren’t Czar and Kaiser derived from Caesar? They think they are Emperors.

In 2012, we can get rid of the other trash.

In Houston, the street signs are in English and Chinese (no joke).

Yet none of the driver safety messages are in foreign languages. I guess non-English speaking drivers have superior skills and know not to drive in the EZ tag without a tag, etc.

Because someone has "the hook up" on the gig to sell such signs. And then there is the labor cost to install them. Need a foreman, two men to install it (one to hold the ladder), and someone to come around and sign off on the job when it is complete. Oh yeah, and the surveying team to do the preliminary investigations before the signs are ordered.
