Bang! Pow! '60s-Style Batmobile Replicas for Sale
Yahoo! ^ | Sep 28, 2010 | Claudine Zap

Holy tricked-out ride, Batman! The '60s-style Batmobile is now available -- for those with Bruce Wayne bank accounts -- in life-sized replica form.

DC Comics has officially licensed Fiberglass Freaks to re-create, down to the flame throwers (working, natch), the futuristic car that the Caped Crusader drove in the 1960s TV series.

For $150,000, you too could keep Gotham City safe. Or at least look really, really cool while sitting in traffic.

Each car frame is built around a 1970s Lincoln Town Car. And only eight of these hand-crafted beauties roll off the factory floor each year. Company founder Mark Racop has been perfecting the design pretty much his entire life, way before he got the official go-ahead. According to his website, the Batmobile-obsessive fell in love with the car from the show at the tender age of two.

The cars are road-ready and come equipped with a GM 350 crate engine, Radir wheels with custom bat spinners, and a paint job only a superhero wanna-be could love. And need we mention the bat-wing shaped tail fins? This car gives new meaning to joy ride.

And because these wheels are pimped up, the 1966 Batmobile also comes equipped with some very 2010 additions: a DVD player with LCD screen in the dash (to play re-runs of the series, obviously) and a high-end stereo to blast the "Batman" theme song.

Only worth it if they threw in Julie Newmar (Catwoman) in her prime.

With my luck I would get Earth Kitt (the other Catwoman) circa 15 years after the Tv series was over.

Apparently the original drove like crap. Too much weight.

I would rather drive the ‘70s Town Car. What a waste of them on a stupid idea. I can see off the bat that they are undrivable in a lot of states. No headlights, no title.

Apparently the original drove like crap. Too much weight.

That's true of a Batmobile replica tested by Car & Driver magazine. The other cars tested are Starsky & Hutch's Ford Gran Torino, the Back To The Future De Lorean Time Machine, Mad Max's Ford Falcon Interceptor, and the General Lee Dodge Charger.

The Batmobile wins in spite of its performance, just because of the cool factor.

>>oo much weight.<<

I’m thinking the body was mostly bondo and/or fiberglass over the body.

Thanks Abin Sur.

Two of my favorite cars are the Batmobile and the Black Beauty from 'The Green Hornet.'

They actually do have headlights and probably are titled as well.

If I were ginormously wealthy I would get one just to park it in the living room and look at it. I would feel like an idiot actually driving it. It probably would also not be fun to drive. I bought a rare sports car once and took it on a road trip. Everyone wanted to try to pull up along side and look at it. Really annoying.

Never mind the batmobile...I just want the mancave underneath my house...i have an appointment to get to...oh snap! I go into my study, open the Darth Vader mask, open the sliding door. Down the pole, to the car, out my private access road, on to life. Get back home, hit the gas lift, all is well.

I have seen both and lot of other really cool cars (like the original Popemobile) at the Peterson Auto Museum in Hollywood.

Definitely worth a visit if you come to L.A.

I remember watching the TV show as a kid. Years after the fact, I wondered how they were able to show Julie Newmar on TV like that. I mean she was almost obscene and the flirting with Batman. I am amazed it was never censored.
