VANITY: What kind of TV to buy -- ours broke!
living room | 09/28/10 | self

Posted on 09/28/2010 3:48:34 PM PDT by Yaelle

The volume control, which has been iffy for a year, finally quit working at all on our old "little" HD TV in the living room. We need a new TV rather quickly, and I am overwhelmed both by the offers around online AND the desires of certain young family members.

This should be in the 40s, inchwise, great quality so we don't have to buy one in the near future again, and good for watching movies, TV, sports, Netflix/other computer applications, and serious video gaming. Basically everything!

What would you get, or what have you recently purchased that you like?

“I LOVE my Samsung.”

I just bought a 50” Samsung plasma 3d and it is awesome. And I got a great deal from Best Buy.

Whatever you get, get it at COSTCO. They have great TV’s, prices, support, and warranties.

Do you like Bob Dylan? Did you know he can’t sing?

It’s called a library card. It’s less expensive than a tv, and it won’t rot your brain.

Buy or borrow a used TV for a couple of months, and wait for Black Friday.

Great advice. That way she'll be able to see Bristol Palin win Dances with Stars. (My wife watches it and I've asked her to call me whenever Bristol's on).

I was looking at the 46” Samsung with the LED and 24 Hz. Worth it, huh?

Or if it's got audio out jacks, run that to a cheap receiver for sound for a while.

Yes he is. And in continuing my thread hikack, let me share a song he wrote about a hundred years ago

T.V. Talkin' Song

One time in London I’d gone out for a walk
Past a place called Hyde Park where people talk
’Bout all kinds of different gods, they have their point of view
To anyone passing by, that’s who they’re talking to

There was someone on a platform talking to the folks
About the T.V. god and all the pain that it invokes
“It’s too bright a light,” he said, “for anybody’s eyes
If you’ve never seen one it’s a blessing in disguise”

I moved in closer, got up on my toes
Two men in front of me were coming to blows
The man was saying something ’bout children when they’re young
Being sacrificed to it while lullabies are being sung

“The news of the day is on all the time
All the latest gossip, all the latest rhyme
Your mind is your temple, keep it beautiful and free
Don’t let an egg get laid in it by something you can’t see”

“Pray for peace!” he said. You could feel it in the crowd
My thoughts began to wander. His voice was ringing loud
“It will destroy your family, your happy home is gone
No one can protect you from it once you turn it on”

“It will lead you into some strange pursuits
Lead you to the land of forbidden fruits
It will scramble up your head and drag your brain about
Sometimes you gotta do like Elvis did and shoot the damn thing out”

“It’s all been designed,” he said, “to make you lose your mind
And when you go back to find it, there’s nothing there to find
Every time you look at it, your situation’s worse
If you feel it grabbing out for you, send for the nurse"

The crowd began to riot and they grabbed hold of the man
There was pushing, there was shoving and everybody ran
The T.V. crew was there to film it, they jumped right over me
Later on that evening, I watched it on T.V.

I concur! I bought a Vizio at WalMart last year: 42” LCD HD. Very reasonably priced compared to the other models. Picture is awesome and it’s made in the USA. I think I paid $780 for it while other manufacturers’ models were $100 more and up.

Decide how you are going to use it. Home theater, etc. and think about sunlight or none in the room it will be in. You don’t want a glare or to pick up the back ground. Do you want use your computer with it?

$799 for a 47 inch LG

That seems like a good deal.

I just bought an IMAC all in one computer. My old PC finally bit the dust. I like it so far.

It’s a notable achievement. But, no. I can’t count that. I’m talking screens here.

Costco gives a double warranty on a lot of things and a very flexible return policy. You could not pay me to go into a Best Buy store. Poor service, horrible return policies, and so on.
If/when we need another TV, we will go to Costco. My laptop is having issues; it is 14 months old; it is covered. Whew! BB would have told me to buy a new one or pay a fortune.
Although, I will admit to one good BB experience. We bought an HD TV a couple of years ago and did get the service contract. Yup, it croaked after 13 months. We went to BB and they actually refunded the money we paid because it was cheaper than fixing it. lol Since then, our local BB has gone downhill fast.
