VANITY: What kind of TV to buy -- ours broke!
living room | 09/28/10 | self

Posted on 09/28/2010 3:48:34 PM PDT by Yaelle

The volume control, which has been iffy for a year, finally quit working at all on our old "little" HD TV in the living room. We need a new TV rather quickly, and I am overwhelmed both by the offers around online AND the desires of certain young family members.

This should be in the 40s, inchwise, great quality so we don't have to buy one in the near future again, and good for watching movies, TV, sports, Netflix/other computer applications, and serious video gaming. Basically everything!

What would you get, or what have you recently purchased that you like?

Four televisions. All righty. Who has more than four?

Try no TV for a while. Like until after the election. Volunteer for a good candidate with the hours you used to spend zoned on the tube.

Waiting for the “TV? Who needs a TV? Haven’t watched one in 20 years.” post.

I’ve had a Samsung “Touch of Color” TV for about 2 years. I like it lots.

What I like about the Samsung is the Home Theater Receiver accepts USB thumb drives with AVI video files...much easier than DVDs for home videos...and the sound is superb. They work together with one remote with the Samsung TV.

We’ve had good luck with the Vizio’s. Buy at Costco (yes, I know they’re anti gun lib scum) and the warranty gets extended for an extra year.

I love my 46” Samsung. I bought it 1 1/2 years ago after an intense study of every technology and brand out there at the time. No regrets. There are cheaper sets, but I favor the Samsung for picture quality. If you can afford to, go with LED backlighting and 240Hz screen refresh rate — the picture will knock your socks off!

IF they all work, it counts. Six televisions...Who has six?

The very “best” are the top of the line Samsung and Sony LCDs. Their mid-level stuff is good too. Samsung seems to have a bit of an edge over others these days.

But lower cost brands like Vizio, while not quite as good, are still good. Hard to buy an actually ‘bad’ TV these days, unless it has a defect.

That is very low cost re the Vizio. Are you sure they are good for the duration? Why are some so much cheaper than the others? (Volume?? LOL)

Just last week I bought a Samsung 46” LED (don’t get a LCD the tubes in the back will get darker as time goes on) You should be able to pick one up between $5-600.

I have an LG LED 40”. I did a lot of research and, what finally convinced me- a lot of bars have LG TV’s. Samsung has a great rep, but be careful- some of the screens are very shiny and you can see your reflection on the screen in very dark scenes. Once you make up your mind, I recommend buying it online from ONECALL. Highest rated online retailer in the country. Plus- no sales tax. That alone saved my 150 bucks. Also, you can sometimes get free delivery, as well.

I quit TV years ago. I suggest a nice big aquarium with lots of pretty colored fish in it. Silver mollies are cool.
