What in the heck is a wombat? That's the question that a lot of very jealous people are sure to ask after learning about a man who left a considerable fortune to the Wombat Awareness Organization.
Australian news outlets have gone wild about the story of an American man who left $8 million to the "non profit organisation specialising in large scale rescue and rehabilitation of the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat." The donation will come in $1-million-per-year increments, starting next year. His family has asked, perhaps not too surprisingly, for anonymity.

WOMBAT STEW:
1 wombat, cut into pieces
4 large carrots
2 brown onions
6 potatoes, diced
8 celery stalks, sliced diagonally into 1cm pieces
4 beef stock cubes
1/2 cup soy sauce (optional)
200g green beans.
In a very large pot bring 6 litres of water to the boil.
Add the wombat pieces and cook for 5 hours.
In the last 45 minutes add the other ingredients.
Add salt and pepper to taste.
Take off the heat and add a large handful of chopped parsley.
Serve with rye bread.
Sounds like something my wife would call me.

The surest way to guarantee that a species will never become extinct is to make it a commercial venture. Farm them, kill them, can them, sell them. Guaranteed we will have wombats forever. No need for endowments.
