MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South mother is charged with reckless driving while having 13 children in the back of her Ford Explorer, but she says she did nothing wrong the night she and her children were arrested.
Police responding to a fight at Crystal Palace say they saw Treshundra Barnes, 25, driving at a high rate of speed while serving back and forth. They say none of the 13 children in the car were wearing seat belts.
Officers say Barnes nearly hit several children.
"That never happened at all," Barnes said. "The only thing I was doing was hitting the brakes. Speeding I wasn't doing, but I was constantly hitting my brakes, turning around, trying to calm my kids down."
While the car was moving, police say several kids were hanging out the windows, screaming, and waving their hands at officers.
"They was loud and making a lot of noise, yes, they was distracting me, but I slowed down," Barnes said. "Trying to calm them down and get their attention but before I gathered everybody together and calmed them down, he had already pulled me over."
Barnes won't be driving for awhile after another incident over the weekend.
An Action News 5 reporter and photographer were at her house Sunday, covering a shooting.
She says a man with a gun carjacked her during a the incident, and her Ford Explorer is now being held as evidence.
This is Barnes' first reckless driving charge. She is also facing fourteen counts of violating the seat belt law, and she's charged with not having a driver's license.

What's the big deal? With 13 kids I'd say she's pretty damn well experienced with serving back and forth.
I always pull over before serving in my car.

My parents had 5 children. We would go to church in a passenger car, with the baby on Mom’s lap, the next youngest in the middle front and the three oldest in the back seat. No one wore seat belts. My grandfather actually cut them out of his brand new car. Said they were a Communist plot or something like that.
