I just heard Nirvana on the oldies station
Sigh.....I keep waiting for the Rolling Stones tour to be sponsored by Depends and Viagra.....
They can call it the “High and Dry” tour
And now it comes full circle: the songs of the late 80s, maybe early 90s, that were on the pop charts when WODS went oldies are now _ON_ WODS
I used to be a DJ at an Oldies station and at the time we played only pre-Beatles music (1950s-early '60s Rock 'n Roll), now that station has a playlist like you mentioned and they call it "Classic Hits."
But what about today's kids? What the heck are they listening too? I could not name one top ten song or group from today, unless it's on the country charts.
Nowadays that's the format of 1000 watt AM stations that go dark at sunset.
They suck. Really. Suck.
Yes...in Boston for awhile WZLX 100.7 used the term classic hits (a bit more rock heavy) though now are “classic rock”.
A diff station, WROR 105.7, has a “hits of the 60s, 70s,
and 80s” format and briefly used the term classic hits, too.
A smaller station in Lowell MA was doing a show called
“Beatles and Before” at night (talk during the day) though
I think they call it “Beatles and Beyond” now.
The “O” word obviously is a downer in radio these days as it reminds people they’re OLD!*
(Those oldies...but goodies...remind me of you)
*—and of course Harry Chapin had a hit around 73 or 74
about a washed up DJ who went around the country from
station to station but now is “the morning DJ,
at W-O-L-D (D, D, D, O-L-D)”
LOL! It was an AM, but we signed off at midnight.
More talent, More originality, Less marketing
I think he’s a great choice too. As someone earlier today said, it’s either going to be totally awesome ... or a big bomb.
Gutsy role.
The idea behind dropping older music is “if you grew up in the 50s, you’re retired now”. And not a good “demo” for
advertisers. They would rather go after baby boomers (I was born in 62, arguably at the very end of the baby boom generation)
“I turned 40 today. “
I’m pretty sure that I have shoes that old. :-)
I just heard Nirvana on the oldies station

That’s nothing.
I just heard them on the elevator on my way back up from lunch.
(not sereisly)
Good One and then there is this one as well:
“The older I get the older old is...”
Same reaction when I heard Bon Jovi on 105.7 Cleveland.
I am sure they are fine shoes indeed! ;)
+1
Each day I thank God my 9-year old son still likes the stuff I like. When he hears a car go down the street blasting that annoying boom boom sound or hip hop, he says its dumb-dumb music.
He likes listening to a 60s oldies station during the day, and he loves going to bed listening to my Edgar Bergen / Charlie McCarthy old time radio cassettes. I stopped asking him to stop laughing and go to bed, hoping that this continues.
I find myself listening to the “oldies” station more and more now, especially with lady gaga and the like on everywhere else!
I know what you mean. They used to say music was marketed to the 18 - 35 demographic but today they calculate that in months rather than years.
Oh, my son does like some of my ‘70s and ‘80s stuff. He’s really into Clapton’s older stuff. And Pink Floyd fascinates him. He’s even sat through “The Wall.” Guitar Hero and Rock Band makes it cool for kids to like their parents music these days.
