We desperately need an amendment to the Constitution that prevents this kind of shit.

Check out the latest hot pop culture couple: Lady Gaga and Senator Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat and majority leader.

After winning eight MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night, including one for her collaboration with Beyoncé on “Telephone,” the pop star urged her “Little Monsters,” as she calls her fans, to call Mr. Reid and encourage him to schedule a vote on repealing the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

“Gay veterans were my VMA dates,” Lady Gaga tweeted to her 6.2 million followers Tuesday, letting down her poker face. “Repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. CALL HARRY REID to Schedule Senate Vote.”

The political paparazzi were thrilled as the colloquy unfolded in the Twittersphere.
Using both proper hash tags and handles, Mr. Reid wrote: “@ladygaga There is a vote on #DADT next week. Anyone qualified to serve this country should be allowed to do so http://bit.ly/9ucdIj #nvsen.”
Mr. Reid had already announced on Monday that the Senate would next week take up the annual Pentagon policy bill, which includes a provision that would allow the Defense Department to end the policy. But his office said he was more than happy to hear from Lady Gaga.

“His tastes trend more towards Wilco and the Killers,” said Jim Manley, Mr. Reid’s spokesman. “But the provision is facing fierce support from Senate Republicans next week so he’ll take support anywhere he can get it.”

While it is unclear if Mr. Reid or a staffer sent the tweet, Mr. Manley said that the senator absolutely knew who Lady Gaga was.

“He’s very conversant in pop culture,” Mr. Manley said. “Let’s put it this way: The first magazine he reads each week is People.”
