Pete Rose makes tearful apology (It's about time)
The Boston Globe ^ | 09/14/2010 | Matt Pepin

On Saturday, the Cincinnati Reds celebrated the 25th anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192d hit, which broke Ty Cobb's career hits record.

Later that night, at a roast of Rose at a casino in Indiana, Rose broke down and cried as he made a heartfelt apology for his involvement in betting on baseball.

"I disrespected the game of baseball," Rose said. "When you do that, you disrespect your teammates, the game and your family."

“I did not have sex with that woman, Ms. Lewinski.”

He should NOT have been impeached! His stats were SOOO very good. He should be in the Hall of Fame - right?

Wrong.

Pete Rose is really a criminal - I am against rewarding him after he was banned for life from baseball.

Screw him - MAKE HIM AN EXAMPLE!

And (I think) there’s no evidence he ever through a game. Didn’t he only bet ON his team?

He bet on the Reds every night - to win.

Clinton lied under oath as a sitting POTUS. Pete Rose was a baseball player. Apples, oranges.

He was gambling while still a player, breaking a rule that’s posted in every dugout, probably within his sight while he was calling his bookie during games. Screw his stats, he broke the one rule that has a lifetime ban, and broke it every single day for at least 2 years. Pet Rose doesn’t deserve to get to visit the Hall as a tourist, much less get enshrined.

It’s not called the National Baseball Hall of Infamy. It’s called the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

That’s what he says now, after first lying about whether he was betting on baseball, then lying about whether he was betting on games involving his own team. You really going to believe he never bet against his own team knowing he’s already lied about it twice? Once is an accident, twice is a mistake, 3 times is just dumb.

He was a piker compared to the ones today. The only reason to hate him today is the creepy cultists ala George Will.

I do recognize them. I explain them to my sons and daughter like this. “These are the stats of a man who broke the rule against gambling on baseball. And he doesn’t deserve to be in the National Baseball Hall of Fame.”

That’s why he should never live to see himself enshrined. Even Benedict Arnold’s foot has a statue in New York.

So it's OK to lie for decades about your (Pete Roses) gambling. Let him in the Hall of Fame, you say. He's a good guy with good stats!

I say BS to you, sir. Your arguments are based in liberalism.

I will not respond to you any longer. It will be impossible to have you see the light on this issue.

Have a good day.

Even if you only bet on your team you can affect the game. Do you bench your best reliever today because you have $10,000 on tomorrow’s game and you’ll need him fresh then?

I didn’t say Pete Rose was a good guy or that it was okay to lie for decades. I said his stats, alone, deserve recognition in the Hall.

Get over yourself.

Sorry, you’re wrong.

Rosed gambled as a MANAGER and NOT a player.

His hit record was achieved clean without steroids, PED’s, etc

Hi was clean as a player and did NOT gamble while an active player.

Rose is far more deserving of HOF than Bonds, Clemens, etc

The gambling investigation covered 1985 and 1986, he was player-manager in those years, and betting daily. He broke baseball’s gambling rule the day he broke Ty Cobb’s record.

I never said he bet on them as a player. And I already made the argument that his stats were earned cleanly. What are you talking about? I’m a Buckeye and a Pete rose fan. He should be in the Hall, period.
