WASHINGTON (Reuters) Even seemingly gentle antibiotics may severely disrupt the balance of microbes living in the gut, with unforeseen health consequences, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.
An intimate study of three women given ciprofloxacin showed the drug suppressed entire populations of beneficial bacteria, and at least one woman took months to recover.
The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, supports the common wisdom that antibiotics can damage the "good" germs living in the body.
It may also support the idea behind the development of so-called probiotic products including yogurt with live cultures of bacteria.

I swear by honey. It’s good for a lot of things.
You’re right. I’m sure that this was my fault for not paying attention to my diet as I should. I had also stopped drinking the Metamusil, which keeps the infections from settling in. I so hate to have any operation. I believe that they create as many problems as they cure...sometimes more.
Accutane works too - or is it the same thing?
Antibiotics, when prescribed by a doctor for a specific infection, can be a lifesaver. Most doctors and hospitals prescribe special Probiotics along with antibiotics.
It is the overuse and misuse of antibiotics that has become the huge problem. Given for viral infections like cold and flu, it is completely useless. Overuse and misuse does cause the body to develop resistance to antibiotics, making it more difficult, and tragically, sometimes impossible to treat bacterial infections.
My advice, do not self medicate. Find a good doctor you trust and can rely on, and develop a health partnership with him or her.
Taking Probiotics on a regular basis, like iFlora, is a good idea for improved digestion and immune system.
A year ago I would have been with the rest of you resisting the use of antibiotics. And I still do, for me and the kids. However, my life was saved by antibiotics last December after I got the H1N1, so I do have newfound respect for them.
That flu nearly killed me. I had raging pneumonia after 4 days. Sicker than I have ever been. I have never in my life felt like I could not breathe before — I am pretty healthy. The doc put me on some big as$ antibiotics and I recovered.
Of course I went on some big as$ probiotics afterwards! :)
Now we have all the super-bugs who are becoming resistant to so many antibiotics.Right again! And it's of concern.
Just an fyi, I used to use metamucil, I found a better one if you are interested. It’s just straight psyllim fiber husks (more coarser than metamucil but goes down easy). It is the Roundy’s Brand Psyllium fiber. Pick and Save grocery stores carry it. I just got sick of the orange taste. I found the straight fiber husks works better than metamucil did. I just pop some in a glass of milk. With milk it kind of tastes like oaty cereal.
Oil of Oregano is awesome, extremely powerful. One drop feels like you took a hundred drops. If you don’t like the taste of oregano in foods you shouldn’t put this in your mouth. It works though.
Funny, when I first got the bottle, I actually put a drop on a slice of pizza. Can you imagine? What a joke. There’s no way you could eat that. It needs to be diluted and also never “sniffed.” But, yes, I agree, the stuff rocks. I just don’t know why it’s taken me so long to be introduced to it, as I’ve been following a more holistic approach to health for quite some time now.
I think a lot of people think “tiny bottle, expensive tag, probably won’t do much or last that long.” If they even know what essential oils are or what they can do.
Thanks for the info. I have used the Psyllium before, but I really love the Pink Lemonade Metamusil. I have a very committed sweet tooth. Ha.
What is the Oil of Oregano good for? How is it taken?
It isn’t my stomach that they mess up too badly. All antibiotics seem to make me act like I am high. My doctor had to see it for himself to believe me. Bactrim the one I get the most makes me feel so ill all over that I hate it. That Levaquin is the very worst. I refuse to ever take that crap again. I was walking into walls.
>>”A nurse friend told me years ago that sulfur would cure Rosacea.”
I have no knowledge of that, but MethylSulfonylMethane is a source of sulfur. The least expensive source I know is bestvite.com.

strept throat -take an aspirin and get over it....
Not with any degree of safety. Strept is not one you wear out. Going to the ears can lead to deafness, to the heart, pericarditis, to the kidney- renal failure. It just keeps on going, settling somewhere.
Hah I have been meaning to find the least expensive MSM
We just started using it for all sorts of aiments.
Too spendy in the Nutra (sic?) form.
Everyone does not have an adverse reaction to Cipro. It’s powerful but effective.
If you’ll recall it was the drug of choice during the anthrax scare.
>>”Too spendy in the Nutra (sic?) form.”
Don’t know about “nutra,” Bestvite is 240 1000mg capsules for $8.99. ($.0375ea.)
WalMart was 60 1000 mg caps for $9.99 (IIRC)($.1665 ea.)
The bulk powder MAY be cheaper, but, for me, capsules are easier to take. I need to take 6 caps at a time.

Although antibiotics have a valuable function, it is useful to remember that they (AFAIK) they are made from the TOXINS excreted by various fungi. In nature these toxins kill off competing bacteria so the fungus can thrive. People have differing reactions to these toxins.

I don’t know why doctors don’t tell patients to take some probiotics along with antibiotics. Probiotics should be a MUST when taking any antibiotic.
