I need to replace the pump in my well. Who makes the best submersilbe water well pump?
I am pumping from 140ft free flowing into a1500 gallon tank.
The old pump is a 1970 Jaquizzi that is frozen.
Any one know what brands are best and which one not to buy. Thanks
Need to replace pump
Gould, not sure of the spelling.
Our local pump repairmen have been selling this brand for many years. I just replaced a Gould’s close to forty years of age. These pumps cost a little more but, worth every dime. And BTW, Gould’s has a built in lightning protection.
Check out waterpumpsdirect.com. PS I am not trying to pimp the site but you can get some good ideas. How many gallons per minute?
Wayne is a good budget brand. Wayne’s tech support can help at 800-237-0987.
Other brands are Grainger, Franklin or Goulds.
Also check out pumpsonline.com in Modesto.
We have nothing but good things to say about the system, but it has only been 5 years. We garden alot and can have numerous hoses running with no drop of pressure when compared to just one.
Grundfos or goulds
Ok, here is the information you need to have for anyone sizing your pump.
1. You said 140 ft of depth is this the total discharge head or do you need discharge pressure? (Ft/Hd)/2.31 =PSI
2. What is the GPM required?
3. Size and age of pipe from pump to surface? This is required to calculate pressure drop (additional required discharge head at the discharge of the pump) Also, the more flow you need through a small pipe requires additional hp.
4. What is the available power you have for the motor? 110/1ph, 230/1ph, 230/3ph, 460/3ph? Depending on age of the controls you may want to upgrade to a soft start or VFD. You may be required to do this depending on your utility and the size in hp of the gear you are using.
5. For home use, I would recomend Goulds or Grundfos. Stay-rite is also an option. Remember, flow rate and Discharge head are the things you want to focus on. Not just HP. Get a pump curve from whoever you want to buy from and have them explain it. If they won’t give you one or explain it to you, go somewhere else.
PM me if you need more help...
We installed a Gould - bought it at Home Depot

Check cable for old well pump and replace. Often the torque moment of the pump will deteriorate the power cable. Your old pump may be good, and the cable bad... don't find out the hard way.

A. This it to the top of the well head. My tank is about 15 away. the tank is 5ft high. I am going to fill the tank the use a pressure pump to get the pressure for the outlets.
2. What is the GPM required?
A. My well is said to have 12 gpm but that was when it was drilled in 1969.
3. Size and age of pipe from pump to surface? This is required to calculate pressure drop (additional required discharge head at the discharge of the pump) Also, the more flow you need through a small pipe requires additional hp.
A. I have to install all new pipes as every thing is missing from the well head onward.
4. What is the available power you have for the motor? 110/1ph, 230/1ph, 230/3ph, 460/3ph? Depending on age of the controls you may want to upgrade to a soft start or VFD. You may be required to do this depending on your utility and the size in hp of the gear you are using.
A. I have to run all new wiring (it is all missing.) so I can go 110 or 220v. I was goint to install an on/off switch and manualy fill it.
5. For home use, I would recomend Goulds or Grundfos. Stay-rite is also an option. Remember, flow rate and Discharge head are the things you want to focus on. Not just HP. You only got 40 years out of that Jaquizzi? Trash it and get yourself a Jacuzzi...
