The Battle of North Point resulted when a British invasion fleet landed thousands of troop near Baltimore. These same forces had only three weeks earlier attacked and burned much of Washington.

British forces under Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane and Major General Robert Ross turned their attention north towards Baltimore, MD. A vital port city,Baltimore was believed by the British to be the base of many of the American privateers that were preying on their shipping. To take Baltimore, Ross and Cochrane planned a two-prong attack with the former landing at North Point and advancing overland, while the latter attacked Fort McHenry and the harbor defenses by water.

This happened during a period historians call the "War of 1812" although it lasted into early 1815 with the Battle of New Orleans.

Jounny Horton certainly had a way with lyrics ...

“Sam crossed the majestic mountains to the valleys far below.
He talked to his team of huskies as he mushed on through the snow.
With the Northern Lights a-runnin’ wild in the land of the midnight sun,
Yes, Sam McCord was a mighty man in the year of 1901.”

Interesting how Sir Alexander Cockburn (pronounced Co'burn, btw) morphed into Sir Alexander Cochrane. Baltimore aside, this was the chap who burnt the White House, and he should be better known (and reviled).

If you're ever on Jeopardy!, go with Cockburn, trust me.
