....you know?
You’re RIGHT! LOL!
It still cracks me up that the reason Diana Rigg was so incredibly popular was because when she appeared in The Avengers, she had studied, or even mastered, the countenance of an upper class British dominatrix.
This is not the crude, Americanized version, a sexual prostitute, but a dominant woman who sheer force of personality directs others around in an overly orderly fashion. With an air of intolerance and ferocity, but expressed minimally. And is paid handsomely for it.
A superb example of the personality type was seen in the dog trainer Barbara Woodhouse, who had the most popular television show in Britain for some years. Even an addle-brained, frenetic dog, she had never met before, would instantly respond to her commands as if it had been in training for weeks. She was a dog drill sergeant, through force of will and voice alone. Hypnotic to watch in action.
But Diana Rigg with this countenance, and every moment she was before the camera, she controlled the show, upstaging Patrick Macnee, which he wisely did not try to contest.
And she made the mistake of moving away from that, hot off the set of the Avengers, into OHMSS. But her trying to *not* be Mrs. Peel was not what the audience wanted. And poor George Lazenby didn’t stand a chance, no matter how many times he skied down that mountain.
+1 for zoinks factor.
“Just keeping the British end up”
I find it interesting that he thinks that he bedded them. Perhaps it was the women who did the bedding.
I’ve always wondered about how these situations are portrayed in the media. The women is always given a pass in the sense that the famous men are always assumed to be the initiators of these couplings. Why is it so hard for people to think about women as the aggressors. I’m not saying that the men were forced, but some of the famous guys out there who get a lot of action are marginally talented and utterly average looking at best.
They undoubtedly get too much credit for skills they simply don’t have. The fame is enough for a women to be interested. Just look at Charlie Sheen.
Wilt Chamberlain says:
I look at it this way: Somebody has to make up for me, in my past three and next two lifetimes. Might as well be George Lazenby.
Hey, Thanks!
Always thought it strange that I invariably watched the Avengers kneeling.
You mean besides the people who see the article title, clearly know what the subject matter will be, and then feel compelled to post ?
>>> One presumes his performance in bed was better than his performance on screen, as the latter had no repeats.
If you ever read the Ian Fleming novels, of the various Bonds it was Lazenby came closest to giving us 007 as he was intended, although perhaps just a little too pretty. However audiences who knew nothing of Bond other then Connery's robokiller were jarred by the difference. Nice try but under the circumstances, a hopeless task. Mainly he served as the buffer that permitted Connery's terminator to become Moore's buffoon.
There were more Bond Girls in OHMSS then in any other Bond movie. I suppose they had to be kept occupied somehow.
Yes besides any of those people. Where have you been? This has been addressed.
I’m heartened to learn that there was something stiff other than his acting.
