I understand that toddlers cannot be silenced with a word or a look.

You never met my mother...

I remember my mom saying, “either stop crying or I will give you a good reason to cry.” It was my dad who had that look. Scary!

However, I'm waiting for the restaurant that "says no" to loud adults.

In my experience that restaurant would find themselves the target of Eric Holder for "racism."

Oh yeah, & “Go get me a switch, & it had better be a good one”.

It was like the condemned man having to tie his own noose on the way to the gallows. Very effective, & may I say sincerely, “Thanks Mom & Dad”.

And if it isn't big enough, she'd go out and get the entire tree.

Years ago..when my little ones acted up, they suddenly would stop and even become quite still. When asked about their change in behavior, they would say they knew I was upset because of my eyes. Took some time to develop 'that' look. ;)

AND I 'never' spanked!

I heard of another restaurant that put up a sign, words to the effect of, misbehaving children would be given a sugary treat and a free puppy.

We stopped going to most places because there is a lack of parenting in the US. Probably 25% of the parents are good parents and have taught their children well, but the other 75% have screaming brats.

“So, parents, how about this? If your child can’t handle a particular public situation, leave the child at home with a babysitter. If you can’t find a babysitter, don’t go at all.”

YES YES YESSSSS!!!!

We had some friends who, years ago, took their 7-year-old with them to see “Kill Bill” because they could not find a sitter, and they wanted to see it the weekend it opened.

They were shocked yes shocked when the kid was bored and jabbered throughout the movie and some other patrons complained to the usher. And they were also shocked yes shocked when were called to his school later that week to “discuss” his “inappropriate” language.

It’s not like seeing or not seeing this flick that weekend would change their lives.

So many people will deny themselves nothing, at the expense of their kids and other event patrons.

“Many of today’s parents dump the kid in daycare at 6 weeks and leave the childrearing up to strangers for the next 15 years. The parents spend almost no time with the child, so there is no effort spent in attempting to civilize the kid.”

***

I recognize that women often have to work. My mother worked part time. And there are going to be some situations where parents need to leave the home, but they can’t take the children with them. In my day, we had an extended family that lived nearby. Or if no family was available, my folks could get the neighbors to watch us. The neighbors had children our age and they all had the same moral values and principles as my parents. My extended family and the neighbors had my parents’ permission to punish us if we got out of line. Then of course when my folks got home, they would give us the what-for too. My parents would be all right letting neighbors mind us for a while because they knew them and they knew we would be all right with them.

Today, it seems no one has family to help out and who trusts the neighbors? I sure wouldn’t. That’s what’s wrong. We have, as you said, these sterile environments called daycare where the children are raised by strangers. They grow up without the values and discipline they need.

“it is their restaurant, their rules”

Not really - I’ll bet they can’t have a smoking section if they want to. I’ll bet someone in the NC General Assembly will attempt to make this illegal as well.

Got a bunch of Amish and Mennonites around here. They take their kis to the store. You never see their kids grab things at the register and beg for candy, You never see them throw temper tantrums or scream.

There is something you can do with screaming kids, It’s called discipline.

After about 15, they usually are latch-key kids.
