The first question some may ask is Why? Those of us who are LED addicts say Why the hell not? This guy literally took 500 bright white LEDs and created his own giant 50W flashlight. While it may have been just ever so slightly overkill, its still an impressive build. Can you imagine soldering all of those 500 LEDs?!

As you can tell in the video above, it has an absurd amount of controls for various brightness settings. Heck, it could even be a non-lethal weapon as it would temporarily blind any bad guys. Check out all of our DIY lighting projects including some related projects below:

I’m not an expert, but I have studied this a bit. I have bought those little leds and I have wired them series / parallel, about 100 of em, and powered them with an old adapter.
A 26 watt cfl gives about 1600 lumens.
50 watt / 4000 lumens is pretty good.
There are other units of measure, such as millicandelas.
There are also other factors, such as the directionality of the beam.
I doubt that a commercially available standard glove box flashlight would give 5500 lumens. 5500 of something else maybe.
People who follow LEDs, and I do, a bit, watch very closely how many lumens per watt an LED gives. The good ones do over 100 lumens a watt. Crees are apparently the best, they’re breaking records left and right, but it takes a while to go from the lab to the store.
LEDs are more efficient than CFLs which are more efficient than incan.
:-))
The possibilities are endless including shining deer a mile away while armed with a .50 cal..............
Bulb removable? I like the gooseneck. And 3w on a LED is plenty bright.
Me too ...I don't know why...but I first saw it when I was seven on tv and was scared to death, and normally I was not the type to get scared.... that movie as 50's cheapo sifi just had something on a primal fear level for kids
I saw it when it came out. Big screen. Freaked me out!
a 3 watt LED is about as bright, if not brighter, than a 100 watt bulb, except that it’s directional. I have 4 or 5 3 watt led bulbs. Some have 1 3w chip, others have 3 1w chips and they have 30 degree lenses. Good light bulb replacements if you want directional light.
An average 60 watt incandescent light bulb produces on average about 800 lumen’s. Obviously the LED pack advertised will produce four or more times the amount of light photons.
LOL!
I hope it’s not my proctologist.
Photons feel good.
I thought my 100 LED light was overkill!

I got one of these and it blinds me when we go camping but it is great and the batteries last quite a while. Unlike most LED lights, it uses 8 AA batteries but it puts out some lumens!!
