A functional pack understands no such “affections”.
They understand -only- consistent leadership, pack hierarchy, dominance and submission.
IMO, your 78 year old mom [and every ill-informed, inadequately knowledgeable dog owner like her] is guilty of animal abuse and definitely "part of the problem".
Through her inability to build and maintain a functioning pack hierarchy, she has created monsters.
Without set boundaries and responsible _leader_ship, dogs become frightened, neurotic, emotionally unstable, conflicted...and occasionally, dangerous.
I have no faith in you, your “facts” or your mom, either.
