The movie was making fun of white men. It was a liberal movie.It had the same effect as Archie Bunker did, then. People identified more with the character for how he was, than were repulsed by him for what he did/said.
It's rumored that McDonald's adjusted its policy on breakfasts because of this movie.

Yes, but the message has turned 180 degrees as time has passed. A lot of people, to one degree or another, empathize with the Douglas character. Especially the “99ers”. And I think a lot of guns have been sold to them the last couple years.
