Cops: Calif doctor gets stuck in chimney, dies

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A doctor involved in an "on-again, off-again" relationship apparently tried to force her way into her boyfriend's home by sliding down the chimney, police said Tuesday. Her decomposing body was found there three days later.

Dr. Jacquelyn Kotarac, 49, first tried to get into the house with a shovel, then climbed a ladder to the roof last Wednesday night, removed the chimney cap and slid feet first down the flue, Bakersfield police Sgt. Mary DeGeare said.

While she was trying to break in, the man she was pursuing escaped unnoticed from another exit "to avoid a confrontation," authorities said.

'Kotarac apparently died in the chimney, but her body was not discovered until a house-sitter noticed a stench and fluids coming from the fireplace Saturday, according to a police statement.'

She turned 'gamey' kinda quick, didn't she?

So I’m not exactly sure why she died so quickly. I mean, it’s not long enough to die of thirst, and if she was yelling, she had air. I don’t really understand.

Bakersfield is in the Big Valley in CA, and that valley is an oven in the summer time, usually in the high 90s to 110 degrees or so everyday. It wouldn't take long to bake to death in a chimney. Less than a day, I would think.

Remember it was also a physician-astronaut (woman) that drove from Texas to Florida straight through to challenge her romantic rival.

Something smells about this story, and it’s not just the decomposed body of the doctor. I don’t understand why the boyfriend or house sitter didn’t notice her sooner. He was there when she got there, but then he was gone for several days, and the house sitter noticed the smell. Why would he even hire a house sitter, if he knew he/she might be harassed by the woman? I think there’s more to this than what the boyfriend said. I think he killed her and tried to dispose of the body by stuffing her down the chimney, then reporting that she been stalking him and had dropped down the chimney. His story will fall apart within a week.

The article said it was mechanical asphyxiation: She died because her chest was compressed in the tight space and she couldn’t breath.

And how did he get her dead weight up the ladder and shove her limp body down the chimney? A neighbor reported after the fact that he’d heard a faint call for help but ended up ingoring it, which was probably the woman. No way. She tried to break in by climbing down the chimney. The guy had planned to leave for Europe on Friday, that’s why he had the housesitter come by on Sat. She died sometime Thursday, he came home after she died and left before she started to decompose.

Can’t laugh at this, ever. Poor woman. What a horrible way to die.

Who can ever know what her last panicked thoughts might have been?

Prayers for her. May she rest in a better place.

I’m claustrophobic. I can barely begin to imagine the ultimate horror of her final moments.

Yeah, I don’t see how he could have gotten her up on the roof without anyone noticing. What I do wonder, though, is why, when he came back the next day, he didn’t wonder why her car was still there.

I didn't see that part. I guess that would explain his absence. She just had really bad timing--not to mention really bad judgement.

They said the car was NEAR the home. It was probably parked down the street and he didn’t notice it. She probably parked it there so he wouldn’t notice her approaching his house.
