Wow, I am sorry to hear what you are going through! I had a picc line for 2 months for an infection - antibiotics wouldn’t touch it and I ended up with surgery to remove 18 inches of my colon. I cannot imagine having an infection like that in an area like the spine. I say a prayer for you.

My son just had spinal surgery and I was very concerned about MRSA. While we waited for him I used bleach that I brought from home and cleaned his patient room top to bottom, I also asked every nurse, doc, and tech to wash and purell their hands before coming in the room. If they touched their pager, I asked them to wash again.

I had one doc refuse to either wash his hands or wear gloves and I refused to let him touch my son. I also did not allow any outside visitors until the incision was completely closed. In short, I was a pain in the backside, because, well, it’s my son.

We are 2 months post op and no sign of infection, but we have to be careful with dental appts and such.

I’m glad you beat it! Hope it staying that way. Since 1/09 I’ve had a picc in more often than not. I did one round of zyvox(pill) but that cost me over $9000 and didn’t work.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

As an observer to multiple hospital stays and the cleaning practices on the personnel, it's my opinion that too much reliance is placed on the spray bottle antiseptic. Good old sanitary and antiseptic scrubbing and wiping are things of the past.
An orderly comes in, squirts his little bottle, gives the toilet seat the once over and walks out.
Last time I was admitted to a hospital room there was bandage wrappers under the bed.
