The "intimidating" feeling might have been their eyes.

A good/breed correct Dobermann has an "inscrutable, soul piercing gaze" and deep-set eyes.

It *can* be unnerving.

Most times, you can tell if they're going to have it or not, even as pups.

Odin as a baby:

Even at only 7 weeks, he had that unreadable expression.

At 7 months, he really "owned" it.

BTW....neighborhood story from long ago. One neighbor had a Dobie. In a properly fenced yard....with a wrought iron gate at the end of the driveway.

Another (horribly stupid) neighbor went over there, and put her hand THRU the gate.

Yes, she was bit....AND, she was MAD at the dog owner...nothing came of it, thankfully...
