In the film, Katherine Hepburn loyally tries to cover up her rich and powerful husband's right-wingism which has somehow managed to endanger the country and perhaps the world. I believe that the husband has died, and she is protecting his memory.
This movie was made when the Soviet Union was the huge and overwhelming threat to the entire world, yet it pretended that massive danger came exclusively from some phony, right-wing boogeyman types. It was very similar to the recent Obamunists attempt to depict fictional, rightwing terror groups in the U.S. today in order to deflect public attention from Muslim terrorism. Katherine Hepburn was an east-coast-background, Hollywood liberal and was happy to star in this ridiculous film.
Okay, I didn’t read the post closely enough to take note of the date of the film. I apologize. Wikipedia says 1943, but that still would put the film in the early stage of WWII and not in the 50s, which was my memory from seeing the film. Takes away from some of my point since Hitler, along with Stalin, threatened the world at the time the movie was made. I view Hitler as a leftist along with Stalin, but obviously many do not. Sorry.
Actually, this movie was made when Nazi Germany and Japan were the threat. Production began in 1942 and it premiered in 1943.

Hepburn was in the midst of an affair with Spencer Tracy -- the star of the film, and insisted on being cast over the objections of MGM executives. She divorced her husband during post-production.
