Warren Woman Admits to Shooting Pit Bull
Fox ^

Posted on 08/17/2010 12:49:58 PM PDT by Chet 99

WARREN, Mich. - A Warren woman takes matters into her own hands after she says a pit bull attacked her small lap dog. She says it is not the first time the pup has attacked, so she shot it. Meanwhile, the owners of the pit bull are very upset. They say the dog is friendly and plays with all the kids in the area.

Is a seven-month-old pup who was shot in the back a victim or a ruthless and vicious dog? That depends on who you ask.

On Saturday, Tiffany Pope says Diamond, the next door neighbor's pit bull, attacked and was ready to kill her dog, so she pulled out a gun and fired one shot.

“That breed should just be illegal.”<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Doesn’t work. Every place that has banned them has not only seen zero decrease in dog attacks, but the only people left owning them are the idiots whose dogs were attacking in the first place. The only solution to dog attacks is to pass responsible dog ownership laws that target every dog owner. No dog should be running loose or chained up all the time. No baby should be left alone with a dog. Calgary passed such a law, and contrary to all the places that have banned pit bulls, they have seen a huge decrease in attacks, even serious ones. It is an owner issue.

Dude slow down! I didn't say he was right.
I said to me he sounds like he is full of righteous anger.
If you thought I was indicating that I thought that made him right, then you are incorrect.
Geez, talk about jumping to conclusions. LOL

Nothing in the story or video supports that she shot into her neighbors yard, and the account of the owner seems to indicate that he thinks she lured it onto her property (with her tasty lap dog) waited until she was on her own property and then made the shot.

I think if she fired into his yard, or his dog was in his own yard he would have made that point explicitly, instead he stated that she waited till she was on her own property before making the shot.

Either way, the guys Pitt Bull was running loose, out of his control, and being aggressive towards her small dog.

You maintain that she made the shot while she was on her property but the dog was not?

No I do not maintain that

Your own wishful thinking and reflexive impulse to defend Pit Bull owners who think their dogs should roam out of their control through the neighborhood?

Wrong again. If you knew anything of my posting history you would know
I am an adamant advocate of dog owners keeping control of their dogs.

Pit Bull owners who think their precious luvvy wuvvy little darlings should roam free stink, and frankly so do you.

You're so cutesy wutesy yet copycatish when you get your panties in knot.

“No dog should be running loose”

Yep, and if Timmy’s dog wasn’t running loose, it wouldn’t have been shot.

“Yeah, we all know that as soon as someone gets a CCW, they go looking for something to shoot. /rolls eyes”<<<<<<<<

Unfortunately, it might be true in this case. In the interview, they said the woman always walks out in her yard with the gun. Not to mention, why would she shoot the dog in the back unless it was running away? If it was in the process of attacking her dog, why would she risk shooting them both? It doesn’t add up.

I agree. The owner, yet again, is ultimately responsible for all of this. However, the use of possibly deadly force so close to this woman’s own small dog and nearby children shows a lack of rationality and responsibility. I would not want to live near either of these people.

And the dog was free to be lured to her yard with her tasty little lap dog (yappy annoyance) because Timmy didn't have control of his dog.

No evidence of an attack because she did the right thing and PREVENTED the attack from escalating to her dogs death.

Are you actually suggested she wait until serious injury to her dog resulted?

I have seen a Pit Bull kill an animal that size in seconds.

She did the right thing by her dog, and for the neighborhood.

Loose aggressive dogs need to be shot.

No problem at all. An animal attacking a pet dog can and should be shot.

I suppose it was only a matter of time before people took the logical next step of shooting the mythically evil pit bulls at will...

"I’m not a CCW holder - yet. However, I think that when I do acquire this permit, I will probably be a lot more hesitant about exercising this priveledge. With this “right”, comes great responsibility."

Are you serious? "Privlidge," "right" in quotation marks? She has a god given right to possess that firearm. It's not a privlidge. You spent too much time in MA. The fact that some people want to restrict her rights doesn't negate them.

Thank you for replying. Not much of a dog lover either. I just don’t see the correlation between a permit to carry and someone going off on a dog and shooting it. I agree with you, she was irresponsible even if there wasnt a child near her. No one should just go up to a dog and shoot it. She should have went through the right channels to address the dog’s aggressive behavior. I don’t agree with blaming the person who issued her the permit.

More info here...

A Warren woman who saw her little Shih Tzu being attacked by her neighbor’s pit bull shot the pit bull on the front lawn of her house in the 20700 block of Albany Street.

The dog was taken for treatment and has survived the bullet wound.

The incident occurred at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday when the woman was on her porch unlocking her house door, Warren police Detective Lt. Michael Torey said. She said her dog was on a leash and only a few feet away from her.

“She heard her dog making a high-pitch sound,” Torey said. “When she turned around she saw the pit bull with her Shih Tzu in his mouth and on its back.”

The woman unsuccessfully tried to separate the two dogs, Torey said. The woman, who has concealed weapons permit, pulled out a .380-caliber handgun and fired one round at the pit bull.

Torey said the shot hit the pit bull in its right shoulder and it yelped as it walked back home. Officers checked the shitzu and it didn’t appear to have any injuries but was shaking uncontrollably.

Torey said the pit bull was taken to the Michigan Humane Society office in Detroit where it was treated for the bullet wound.

Torey said there have been numerous complaints with police about the pit bull being loose in the neighborhood. On June 13, 2009, the same victim filed a dog bite complaint.

In another instance, the pit bull attacked an 8-year-old child causing a puncture wounds and several scratches. On Oct. 31, 2009, another complaint was filed against the dog owner.

A violation was issued to the 36-year-old owner for dog at large.

My 5 yr old son and I were chased off a baseball field by a pitbull about 2 weeks ago. I work out of my home and I was finished early. So, I took my kid out to play some baseball.

A pit was out in centerfield so I left my car doors unlocked because he seemed distracted and docile and it was a big centerfield. I positioned my kid by the mound and proceeded to play with me facing the pit.

He meandered over to right field and vanished. Thinking he was gone I continued. But he reappeared through some hedges about half way down Right Field line.

So, I put my kid in the car and gathered up the balls. As I was walking to my car he locked on to me and bolted. It wasn’t that close of a call. I was in the car by about 3 or 4 seconds and i had a bat in hand.

Please leash your pits securely because if a kid of mine is harmed in any way, the dog dies. If it’s serious injury, the owner gets a bat to the knees and ribs.

Be responsible with your Pit and leash it securely. I’m not the only person that feels this way about any dog and especially a Pit.

Thanks for the update. I can’t stand it when people protect their dog AFTER it’s already done something wrong. This dog obviously should be euthanized if it has bitten a human being. Having said that, I think this is a little interesting:

“Torey said there have been numerous complaints with police about the pit bull being loose in the neighborhood. On June 13, 2009, the same victim filed a dog bite complaint.

In another instance, the pit bull attacked an 8-year-old child causing a puncture wounds and several scratches. On Oct. 31, 2009, another complaint was filed against the dog owner.”

If the dog is only 7 months old, it couldn’t be the same one that did these things. It seems either the dog owner has a record of being grossly negligent with his numerous pets, or someone is quite confused here. Of course, people will still blame the breed, and this idiot will continue to obtain dogs and ruin them, to the detriment of all responsible pit bull owners.

Thank you for posting the updated story. The exeprt above seals it in my mind that the woman was justified in shooting the dog.

Are you serious?

Yes, I’m serious. A CCW is a priviledge, unfortunately, in this world. Lack of a CCW is not a denial of Second Amendment rights. It is merely the legal establishments ability to effect “controls” over how these God given ‘rights’ are ‘regulated’. Had the women been in her home, or on her property, and her life or property were in jeopardy, THEN, yes, shoot the THREAT between the eyes. This was certainly NOT the case here. This was a ‘revenge’ reaction, after the fact.
Having said that, and being of the Italian persuasion, revenge is a genetic component of my makeup. But this woman’s dog showed NO evidence of having actually been attacked. And, that is why I suggested that this woman was perhaps a little trigger happy, enobled by the fact that she had just acquired a CCW.

Good catch on the date/age discrepancy.
I’ll keep my eyes open for any additional info.
It does appear though that the owner was irresponsible in letting his dog roam.
