NEW YORK -- Indiana Pacers draft pick Lance Stephenson, after pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs, grabbed her and hit her head on the bottom step, prosecutors said Monday.
A judge released Stephenson, 19, without bail late Sunday night after his arrest on assault, menacing and harassment charges. Prosecutors had asked for $7,500 bail.
In a lengthy statement issued Monday, Pacers president Larry Bird called Stephenson's arrest "very disappointing to the Pacers franchise and to me personally." A defense attorney said Stephenson didn't harm his girlfriend. Quantcast
Authorities said the confrontation occurred around 5 a.m. Sunday when the woman, Jasmine Williams, was returning home to her apartment building with two friends. Witnesses said Stephenson was waiting for her and yelled, "Are you kidding me?" before pushing her down the stairs.
A criminal complaint provided Monday by the Brooklyn district attorney's office said that as Williams lay at the bottom of the stairs, Stephenson picked up her head and slammed it on the bottom step.
When police arrived, Stephenson told them the woman had fallen down the stairs, prosecutors said. The complaint said Williams suffered head and back wounds and possible damage to her neck.

Hope this isn't a pattern in his life, pleading guilty to disorderly conduct for groping a girl is usually lawyer speak for he tried to rape her but it was a he said she said with no witnesses so he plead guilty on a misdemeanor charge.
I thought Larry Byrd had more brains than his name implies, he should have known this kid was trouble and it's exactly what Indianapolis doesn't need right now.
Good luck with that, Larry.
Yea, the Pacers and the Colts just keep getting in trouble. On second thought, it’s all of them.
Of course now, some Freeper will come along and tell me that I’m using the word “all” and it just simply isn’t all of them. Agreed. But fire away anyway.
“Stephenson “should not have put himself in the position he was in early Sunday morning,” the former Boston Celtics great added. “We have consistently emphasized to our players the importance of not putting themselves in situations where bad things can happen.”
Good grief! You need to work on that statement a bit more.
You know, the position where he was banging his girlfriend’s head on the cement at 5 a.m. Very unfortunate position.
How much longer before they actually allow tackles and head slaps in the NBA?
Hey, who cares, as long as he can “play good ball”??
Hell, they’ll let someone who brutally kills dogs play again. This is nothing!
(Do I really need a sarc tag?)
Number One male.
The Judge cut him loose for free, I guess he couldnt afford the $7500 bail the state asked for. I guess the Judge was a Pacer fan.
Hmmm... I wonder why he didn’t have to post bail?
Did Larry change the spelling of his last name recently in honor of the passing of the senator from West Virginia?
Bitch set him up/s
the problem is they pull a majority of these kids literally from the projects. These kids have grown up knowing nothing but violence and then people are shocked when they get violent. I am not saying this kid is a victim of his surroundings, he should be held responsible and go to jail. I am saying that people should take into consideration ones background and realize what they are potentially getting besides someone with a decent jumper.
I dont watch NBA at all, and the NFL much either because frankly they’ve become nothing more than thug sports and all they are is glorified in the media.
Nope, typo on my part. I have friends that spell their name that way and I haven’t had enough coffee yet.
Thugs in the NBA ?
Naaah !
Those were mean cars!
At the end of the article, someone posted a reply to the article saying that this POS raped a "young girl" a while back, also.
Does anyone know if there's any truth to that?
This reminds me of a scene from an old movie of the late 40’s where Richard Widmark as a psycho criminal pushed a woman in a wheel chair down a flight of stairs.
That was great.
Ever see Lee Marvin throw steaming coffee in his gangsta’ girlfriend’s face.
Classic stuff.
Good think NBA thugs don’t watch TCM.
“Kiss of Death”
Don’t recall that one, but I recall Cagney pushing the grapefruit in his bimbo girlfriend’s face, a classic.
