The FDA has approved Ella, a new morning-after contraceptive pill effective for up to five days after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
An FDA expert advisory panel last June unanimously urged the FDA to approve the drug. Called Ella in the U.S., the drug already is approved in Europe and sold there as EllaOne.
The only other emergency contraceptive is Plan B. Unlike Ella, which will be available only by prescription, Plan B is sold without a prescription for women aged 17 and older.
Side effects of Ella, similar to those of Plan B, include headache, nausea, abdominal pain, pain/discomfort during menstruation (dysmenorrhea), fatigue, and dizziness. The drug should not be taken by women who are pregnant or nursing.
The two emergency contraceptives work differently:
Plan B contains levonorgestrel, a progestin hormone used in lower doses in many birth control pills. Ella contains ulipristal, a non-hormonal drug that blocks the effects of key hormones necessary for conception. Plan B should be taken as soon as possible after sex. It may work for up to 72 hours, but is ineffective once insemination triggers the hormonal surge that leads to ovulation. While emergency contraception should not be delayed, Ella's effectiveness does not fade for 120 hours (five days) after sex, regardless of whether the hormonal surge has occurred.
Ella is manufactured by Paris-based Laboratoire HRA Pharma. It will be distributed by Watson Pharma Inc., of Morristown, N.J.
I’m surprised that Planned Parenthood didn’t oppose this.Products like this are bad for the baby butcher’s bottom line.
I’m interested to hear what other freepers think about this. While “life begins at conception”, I think these pills are a great thing in certain circumstances and will prevent abortions and unwanted preganancies.
That said, are people smart enough to know when an oops moment occurred?

I guess my question is, would a woman take it every time after all sex or is it cost prohibitive? Is it a judgement call or a 30 day supply for a sexually active woman?

There are no “oops moments”when birth control is used.
just talking to doctors at the local fishing hole..some think a lot of the birth cotrol products help girls develope early and grow facial hair..

Is this used every day or just when you think something happened? Why not use conventional “pill” methods then? Does that make sense?

I’m a single guy in my 30’s and most women lately won’t take the pill for whatever reason. Its actually been a long time since I met someone on the pill.
The FDA is worthless. Anything that is against civilized people, will be approved. Good drugs that might keep people alive and be beneficial will be stalled for years.
If you believe that life begins at conception, then this pill induces an abortion. It does not prevent one.
Yes, make sure minors can get it without parental consent.
Make sure they are emotionally damaged. Physically they heal. It's the emotional damage that lasts a lifetime.
That’s the debate I’m having with myself then.
