Koral Wira, 14, was fishing with her parents and a friend near Venice, Fla., when a barracuda went for her dad's bait and ended up biting her instead. Her dad, Rob Parker, submitted these photos and Wira told the story.
After anchoring the boat 4 miles off shore, Parker baited his rod with herring. Wira switched seats to get out of the hot sun, and watched as her dad cast. Moments later, she heard a splash and saw a long silver flash in the air. A barracuda jumped from the water and opened its mouth. As it hit her left arm, it clamped down with razor teeth.
One day she'll get to pick out his nursing home.

Or the flight of steps to shove his wheelchair down!!

Try a little angling here in the Puget Sound. Pikes and Cudas would be toothpicks to what swims in our cold Northwest waters.

The first barracuda I saw face to face were on the ocean side of Key Biscayne while snorkeling. Hundreds of them all over the place in water as shallow as two feet. Lots of needle fish too, which I've heard have speared swimmers in the neck when they were fleeing predators. There was a boater off the coast of Fort Lauderdale who was stabbed in the chest by a stingray when it flew into his boat. He was all alone and managed to get his boat back to shore and he survived. This was shortly after Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray.
She does sort of look like she were wishing she’d had better parents.
Since you mentioned it I looked them over.

Just want to clarify a few things....I know that photo looks horrible...I was there that day...By the time we got to shore..she was joking ,calm and no bleeding..she didn’t even cry...on the other hand I was the basket case...she was telling me to calm down..a photo can say a 1000 words...I know that believe me...she laughs about the photo herself and framed it...her stitches are out.. she’s fine..it healed nice..It will be a day we will never forget...She loves the ocean and she’s right back to her old self....On my end...I scream at every fish that swims by ..

I encountered a ‘cuda longer than I am tall, and by quite a bit, too.
Given that there were then virtually no visitors to that part of the Cay Sal Bank, it is not surprising such a fish could live long enough to reach such a size.
For all the damage he could have inflicted, only curiosity was exhibited. Thank G*d.

Just to inject a fact or two, the girl’s father cut the anchor line rather than raising the anchor. He was not wasting any time getting his daughter to medical help. However, had you read the article, the girl was OK, the mother was “stressed out”.
I have observed a few female students injured in one way or another. They seem to cope better than male students. Perhaps their pain threshold is different, perhaps the earlier maturation could be the reason.
It’s mom’s job to hug the kid...dad’s job is to toughen ‘em up.

By the way..We flew to shore as fast as possible... it was one snapshot..and the rest was taken by others on the dock..My Husband stayed behind ... She was already at the hospital!!!!!
