Wrangling over the fate of the debt-ridden studio had thrown its plans to make new movies, including the next 007 film, into disarray.
The 23rd Bond movie had been due for release in 2012, the 50th anniversary of Ian Fleming's spy character's first outing in Dr No.

Good, I like Daniel Craig as Bond. Having seen Quentin Tarantino and Chris Nolan both express interest in directing a Bond movie also makes me excited. It would be interesting to see what either would do with the character. It would also be interesting to see how QT would work with the PG-13 limitation.

Sam Mendes will probably direct it. I am worried about the five scriptwriters they have on the movie.

They could use some pointers from the Connery movies. Quantum of Solace seemed to be less of a Bond film, and more of “just another action film”.

Back about fifteen years ago I bought a VHS set of all the Bond movies. There was a bonus tape with behind the scenes stuff, interviews, etc.
Hamilton was interviewed and he said he told the crew they were going to have fun and to not take things too seriously.
I think he understood that they were doing entertainment, not cinematic art.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service is still my all time favorite. George Lazenby is given a pretty bad rap...he wasn’t at all bad and the story was fantastic.

Obviously we all liked his first JB film, GF, but his ‘70s stuff was a bit silly and cartoonish. SC was too prematurely old and out-of-shape in DAF, LaLD was really a Blaxploitation movie, although TMWTGG was probably the best of the bunch. He was apparently set to direct TSWLM but withdrew.

Lazenby was also believable in the action sequences. Being a decade younger than Connery, one wonders how well SC would’ve handled them when he was starting to get a bit haggard (the scenes in DAF were testament to that, SC looked like he would’ve been killed by Thumper & Bambi in reality).

That’s what I think it’s weakness was. It seemed to be nothing more than an epilogue to Casino Royale. The writing doesn’t really seem to be able to stand on its own.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service 2. From Russia with Love 3. Casino Royale (2006) 4. The Living Daylights 5. Tomorrow Never Dies or Goldfinger (toss up- maybe Goldfinger slight edge)
