Bikini baristas brewing controversy at Wash. coffee stand

NORTH SPOKANE-- Bikini Baristas in North Spokane are at the center of a clothing controversy.

Some locals claim the outfits at Big Shots Espresso at Lidgerwood and Francis have crossed the line.

The girls say they’re just trying to have fun at work. In fact, they were comfortable enough to let KREM 2 News videotape them at work.

The owner says the girls make up to $19 an hour.

But not everyone likes it. One woman says she found it shocking to see the ladies out dressed like “porn stars” and “prostitutes” trying to sell coffee.

The baristas say they’ve heard the complaints before. One woman got so heated last week, the owner had to call police. A barista says the woman pulled over in the parking lot and walked from window to window causing a scene. The baristas ended up locking the windows. The woman was gone by the time police arrived and the girls say she hasn't been back since.

Some of the customers say they back the girls 100%. One woman told KREM 2 News, “You can only look like that for so long in your life, ladies get over it. So what if your man looks at them, so what? I think what they’re doing is great.”

The owner says when police came out last week, they were told they’re not doing anything wrong. The owner also mentioned if she couldn’t run a stand like this, she wouldn’t have one at all.

What is the logic in screaming about sexy outfits, sexy females selling a product? Has anyone watched TV or movies lately? Or is it only bad if it isn’t slickly produced and shown to millions at a time?

Really? Because it seems like on nearly every thread I see you're on you find a way to work in a mention of adolescent Japanese girls in sexually provocative situations.

It sure doesn't seem like you have hate for it to me.

and I forgot to add......on MSM channels, the sexy young things selling products with sex appeal, are frequently under the age of 18.......but that is chic, cool and high fashion.

My favorite coffee house in Washington was “The Shelter Half”, where you only paid for food and coffee if you wanted to, and even then, you paid what you wanted.

I never paid, also I think that it was either self serve, or often self serve since I usually had to make my own food when I was there.

Apparently the bikini barista shop is an emerging trend in the Northwest. One in Bellevue Washington was called Knotty Bodies.Maybe its recession driven.

“The bikini barista trend hit its stride in 2009 and launched a revolution in the world of espresso stands; this is Seattle, and espresso stands are about as abundant as street lights, but in an attempt to get a leg up on the competition some coffee shops are taking the sexy route. ‘The hotter the better’ claims some shop owner, and it seems to be working; baristas in spike heels, lingerie, fish nets and other skin-revealing attire are attracting long lines — and big tips. Bikini barista fever continues to run wild, and at last count we added four more spirited coffee shops in the Northwest this month alone.”

If you don’t want ‘em*, I’ll take ‘em (provided they’re over 18). ;-D

Didn't that place go under? Too many of its customers decided that zero was the appropriate remuneration.

It was a political place during the Vietnam war, so it lasted about 6 years, that is why I never paid, I went there to argue politics and to watch the North Vietnamese war footage.

My daughter worked at an espresso type stand for several months and enjoyed it immensely. She did not wear revealing clothing or even low cut tank tops. She found that the male customers did not tip her as much as the girls wearing very little, but, the female customers tipped her more that the other girls because she wore o.k. clothing.

One day some Bikers for Christ came through, and they thanked her for wearing something that did not put them in an awkward spot. :) I’m very proud of my daughter. She’s got more sense than me!

Those women causing a scene are free advertising. I know if there was a shop like this near here my wife would stop there for her daily coffee.

Whoot! A geisha bar! With food, no less!

I’ll bet a dollar that as an extra ‘service’, they’ll feed you all the food you order (and more).

;-P

Sounds like a fine young lady with some good common sense.

So many folks do not have work today though, so we will see some pretty different competitive marketing strategies for a lot of things. These barista stands are a symptom of our economic trials. No one can convince me that women would want to stand in a bikini outfit selling anything if they didn't have to in order to make 19 bucks an hour, or just have a job.
