Interesting thread. We have been trying to decide on a home defense weapon, and were told by LEO that a shotgun is best. Then someone said that a shotgun is not good because of what one poster said- barrel could be grabbed, makes a mess in your house with the spray, the noise it makes as you chamber the shell alerts the BG (for the good or bad!).
So confusing.

grab barrel - if you are going to watch an intruder approach to arms reach without firing, do not get a gun
Mess - if you are more concerned with decorations or drywall than the occupants, do not get a gun
Give away position - Shotguns come in semiauto as well.
