I, personally, do not think storing a gun, or any weapon, “in battery” is a particularly good idea....

I agree. Giving away your position makes you lose any element of suprise you may have depending upon the circumstances of your situation.
If someone is intent on killing you/making sure there are no witnesses, then giving away your location does you no good.
