I watched William Shatner's new TV show on the BIO channel last night. Bernhard Goetz was his guest on the show. For those freepers not old enough to remember, Bernie Goetz was praised as a hero back in 1984 for shooting four thugs threatening him on a New York subway car.
AFTERMATH with William Shatner
"William Shatner takes an in-depth look at what happens when people are tragically or infamously transformed from unknown citizens into household names overnight, taking viewers back to ... the dramatic events that dominated the American news cycle as he gains exclusive access to the newsmakers at the heart of each story - heroes, villains, perpetrators, victims, family members and law enforcement officials - to dig deep and separate the fact from the fiction. In each one-hour episode, new and often surprising information emerges, not only about the events themselves but about how people's lives have changed in the years since"

William Shatner sits down with Bernhard Goetz, known to many as the Subway Vigilante. After years of silence on the subject, Goetz now talks openly of the day in 1984 when he shot four African American teenagers on the New York City subway -- but with a bizarre emphasis on the mechanics of how he was able to fire off five shots at four people in such a short burst of time. Hero or criminal? Victim or perpetrator? Goetz wonders whether he would have lived a normal life of marriage and family if fate and notoriety hadn't intervened.

DENNY CRANE!!
I’d love to see an episode with Rodney King and Reginald Denny being interviewed together.
Ebony and Ivory....
The name Barack Obama comes to mind.
LOL

HERO!
Those thugs were from Africa?
Sounds like an interesting show (don’t get bio channel) but I’d much rather see Bill what’s-his-name from American Justice then Capt. Kirk as host.
I think it was the Priceline commercials that did it for me. (Though I will admit that the current evil parallel universe one is pretty funny)
IIRC Goetz told a neighbor that he was the shooter.
She turned him in. If he had kept quiet he would have been safe from prosecution.
After that shooting subway crime dropped, big time.
The Goetz effect.
NYC could use a little (a lot) of that now.
“I AM KIROK!”
Nothing bizarre about that. It wasn't a personal thing, he didn't know the muggers. He was simply defending himself.
Of course, in this chickified culture, EVERYTHING is supposedly "personal". Always got to bring up the feeeelings.
Bleah.
I lived around he corner from him then, used to see him often in the neighborhood, The city was a mess then, and I always felt he did he right thing to defend himself. But I will also say that he has “weirdo” and “loner” written all over him, and I very much doubt that he would have ever gotten married and had children no matter what.
“IIRC Goetz told a neighbor that he was the shooter.
She turned him in. If he had kept quiet he would have been safe from prosecution.”
Not according to Mr. Goetz.
He stated that he drove to New Hampshire and turned himself in to NH police.
You are trying to have it both ways. NYC was that bad. Somebody was going to do what Bernie did. The dudes just messed with the wrong person and believe it or not we were all better off for it.
I agreee with you — I thought that was what I aaid.
ALso that even if theis hadn’ happened, he wasn’t a candidate for a normal life.
The police were already looking for him and had a search warrant for his apartment around the same time that he turned himself in.
I guess this would mean that you're both right.
Exactly right. Neighbor asked why he was so glum. He told her.
HE broke the saying, "Shoot, shovel, shutup". He hung himself IMHO. Remember, this was a time before LOTS of cameras in the Metro. You couldn't get away with this today....unless you are very, very good at subterfuge.
