Well, my slim hope before violent revolution is to note that Rome didn't have Rome as an example of what happens when the electorate becomes lazy. But I worry for sure.

There will be no violent revolution. And neither will we lose our Country.
Actually Rome did. The Etruscans.
When the Etruscans ruled 'italy' rome was a backwater nothing swamp and 'romans' were the barbarians. It was the Etruscans who then got fat and lazy, and the 'romans' learned from them -- ripped off their ideas and way of living (decadence). Pretty soon, bang, no more Etruscans and Rome was born.
And prior to 'Rome' their was the Greecean City States and its Democracy. Romans 'borrowed' from them too (Roman Senate), and even stole their gods. The Romans just renamed them, Zeus became Jupiter, etc.
So Rome did have an example, two of them -- they just forgot (Rome was 'too big to fail' /s).
A path we seem to be following now.
Note: By 'Rome' I mean the Western Roman Empire. Not the Eastern Roman Empire which became the Byzantine Empire and lasted until 1453.
