It is part of a medical services programme which offers free dental care to prisoners with financial difficulties in Manila, Philippines.

Nope. Not FORCED, they voluntarily seek treatment and then weigh their option of is the pain of extraction worth the pain of a constant tooth ache.

The interesting part was a couple of days later on the way home from Boston with my brother. It was late, we were finishing up a cath lab installation, so I stopped at a convenience store for some snacks. He reaches into my coat pocket to get the snacks and you guessed it, out comes the molar that I forgot to crapcan.
He was pissed and he's a big guy. LOL
Funny that a British paper should be commenting on another countries dental care.

Of course British citizens have had to pull their own teeth, without anesthetic. At least these Philippine prisoners have someone else do the deed.
Hopefully this is the kind of dental care Joran VanDerSloot can look forward to in Peru.
