I am sure others have pointed this out but many ranges utilize a mandatory “buddy” system with no rentals to lone individuals.
“Porter County Coroner Bob Schulte says the man’s death was caught on camera, which shows the man shooting himself. No one was with him, but there were bystanders in the area.”
Man, 60, shoots self in head at Valparaiso range
A Valparaiso man shot himself to death on Tuesday while test-firing a handgun at the Blythe Sports Shop shooting range, in what the Porter County Coroners Office is calling a suicide.
Valparaiso Police did not release the mans name.
The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m., Cpl. Mike Grennes of the VPD told the Chesterton Tribune on Tuesday, after the 60-year-old man entered the store at 2810 Calumet Ave. purportedly to shop for a handgun. The man chose a handgun of unspecified make and model and asked to test-shoot it at the range, Grennes said, and once inside the range shot himself in the head.
Coroner Robert Schulte said that the man first fired several test shots with the .357 caliber handgun and then turned around and used the gun on himself.
Valparaiso Fire Department EMS personnel transported the man to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus, where he was pronounced dead at 1 p.m.
Schulte has ruled the mans death a suicide.
Schulte said that the incident was recorded by a surveillance camera installed in the range and witnessed by bystanders but that the man came into the business by himself.
No autopsy has been ordered, Schulte added, but the results of a toxicology screen are pending.
