How close do you want to permit someone before you start defending yourself?
Standard residential: .40 S&W M&P. With 1 in the chamber, it will hold 16 rounds AND and a 12 ga. that will hold as many as possible. Practice with the .40.... a lot.
A Remington 700 (.243, .270 or .308) with a good scope never hurts if you want to start shooting before they get close.

Those boating accidents are terrible! After I had mine, I discovered they befell many, many other Freepers too.
