When the first incident occurred, Macys should have provided warnings that parents with small children use the elevators, or immobilized and maintained the escalator as a staircase only. They could have then kept the historic asset in place.

The escalator has been in operation since 1927, and it's only recently that there have been accidents? Amazing. So either Macy needs to replace the escalators, or improve the intelligence of its customer base.
Or maybe it's just a poorly written story.

ANY escalator is dangerous. You should see the things that repairmen find in the pit, shoes, packages.......that grid at the bottom or top will remove toes if you don’t step on it correctly.
