LAS VEGAS Brock Lesnar is back and better than ever.
Ultimate Fighting Championships biggest star literally and figuratively returned after nearly one year out of the Octagon to fend off his toughest opponent ever on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 116. Lesnar (5-1) survived an early barrage from interim champion Shane Carwin (12-1) before responding in the second round, using his championship-wrestling pedigree to take Carwin to the mat and eventually sink in a beautiful arm-triangle choke at 2:19 of the second round.
The 15,000 fans at the MGM Grand Garden Arena standing from the moment the two entered the Octagon erupted into deafening cheers, welcoming the heavyweight champion back with more support than hes ever received before.

That’s a huge part of fighting. Having stamina.
Lesnar’s cardio was horrible as well... It’s just that Carwin’s was worse. There are a lot of guys out there who would wipe the floor with either of these two.
I haven’t seen one.
The old arm-triangle choke.. works everytime.
He defended himself intelligently, looked fine during the first round break, then quickly secured a dominating submission for the win.
It’s all a matter of perspective.
I know it goes back to the gladiators and beyond, but I just don’t see the attraction of watching people fight in such a brutal way. I wish Brock’s NFL career would have happened.
Like who? You are clueless.
It is actually far more humane than boxing. You take a lot less cumulative punishment to the head in MMA than boxing. Boxing is by far more brutal because when you add up all the shots to the head of the long time boxers it is no wonder they seem punch drunk for the rest of their lives.
Fedor anyone?
Doesn't surprise me. I sucked at it, but wrestled in high school. Boxers/hitters rely on their legs/footwork for power, but the wrestler is shooting underneath for their legs, away from their power, which takes away their power. They must always be worried the wrestler will get them that way.
And it would always surprise me that someone could shoot underneath that fast and get to my legs, it's the blink of an eye for a good wrestler. Nearly as fast as throwing a punch. Come up underneath, and then, the easy downward pull on the opponent's leg, and he's flipped on his back. It's very fast for a good wrestler.
Don’t know. Boxing is about my outer limits for brutality. MMA might be less brutal as you say, but it certainly looks more brutal.
Perhaps. But while I don't really care for boxing, and would have never in my wildest dreams participated in it, it doesn't make me squirm and reach for the clicker like MMA,UFC or whatever the fights withing a chain link fence are called. One thing about boxing though: watching Tyson crawl around trying to find his mouth guard after Buster knocked him down was one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
Yep...in MMA a shot to the head that stuns an opponent often leads to a submission on the ground. In boxing that same punch to the head just leads to more punches to the head...
Lesnar quieted a number of his critics tonight. He didn’t rely on brute power alone...didn’t use his bulk to overwhelm Carwin (like he did against Herring and Mir). He kept his cool after getting rocked early and used his ground game to set up a submission.
He’s improved a TON since that first fight with Mir...
Hand-to-hand combat is the oldest sport known to man. It takes the highest levels of patience, athleticism, intelligence, and skill.
I’d like to see what Spider Silva could do. Maybe he’s just too big for Silva to deal with, but I wouldn’t count on it.
Wasn’t Carwin also a NCAA champion wrestler?(D2 I believe)
