The racers are on the track at 2 p.m. each day. As the crowd cheers, the competitors are squirted with water to help them move, and they begin their slow crawl toward the finish line.
This unconventional race, which takes place every day at the San Diego County Fair, features worms instead of horses, and it takes some contestants 10 minutes to cover the short distance.
"I think it's slow, but funny because the little kids cheer on their worms," Landry Urbanowicz, who runs the worm race, said Thursday.
The activity takes place in the farm area at the San Diego County Fair after the daily cornhusking contest. A large yellow laminated circle with lines drawn on it like pizza slices is brought out to the fold-up table, and a bucket of worms is emptied into the center.
The worms are placed on individual letters written on each slice of the circle. Then, the race is on.
Each spectator picks a letter, and the worms must travel about six inches to be deemed a winner.
"It is definitely a different type of race," said Jessica Hartmann, who also works the worm race. "It is interesting for little kids to see their worm cross the finish line."
Seven children cheered on their worms Thursday, along with one grandmother. The worms squirmed and squiggled their way toward the finish line, which they cannot see.
