there are lots of low recoil buckshot loads for the 12 and 20 ga made for law enforcement that can be found in well-eqipped gun shops and police supply houses.
My 12 ga remington 870 is loaded with Hornady TAP shotgun shells.
ROTFLOL OK, yorkie, now I know what the shotgun is really for. Gotta keep the boyfriends in line. In that case I will revise the advice on shot loads and suggest that rock salt should be sufficient. No need to mortally wound a potential help-mate. ;^)
Keep in mind who the recommendations are for. Even low-recoil 12 ga has a pretty serious kick to it. When it comes to home defense 500 yard shots sound a little unlikely to me also. How do you explain to an LEO that you felt your life was in danger when you’ve dropped an illegal alien almost two football fields away from your house?
Ya got it all wrong, TE! I’ve been LOOKIN’ for some big hulkin guys to guard my property. Sigh. But, my cataracts will probably blind me before I find ‘em. LOL!!
Out there in the sticks you never know. And dont forget most big city and sheriffs offices in the desert are going for patrol carbines such as ARs and Mini 14s and similar rifles. six shot shotguns are no match for coyotes with AK-47s and G-3 rifles.
Cheer up, Yorkie!
Tomorrow you join the Armed Patriot Brigade.
Happy 4th!!
Yes, SJB - I have taken notes from all the knowledgable posters here, and will be buying TWO shotguns and lots of ammo! (And from that point on - I will be ‘locked and loaded’.)
No, but I've got an H&K G3, rebuilt on a semiauto only receiver. It has a scope mounted and I have at least 5-600 rounds of ammo for it. I'm not quite that good yet. 200 yards, maybe 300.
I've also got 2 .45 ACP pistols, a "serious social purposes" shotgun, an M4 semi-auto clone (5.56), an M1 Carbine and an SKS.
I should have added that M1 Carbine to the list of appropriate long guns for a petite seasoned citizen. Or for that matter and AR type carbine.
I'm pretty good at hitting tennis balls floating down the river with iron sights with the AR. Maybe 30 yards or more.
20 gauge is smaller, and doesn't quiet kick as much. Although some the effect of a smaller/lighter load is lost because the gun itself is also smaller and lighter.
Betty White would probably have the 12, but unless one has been shooting shotguns for a while, a 20 might be a better choice for a light statured person. I'm hardly that, sometimes I go by El Gato Gordo (The Fat Cat), yet I "made do" with a 20 gauge until I was in my 30s. Shot a lot more pheasants with it that I have my 12, and I'm 60 now.
Shotgun gauge is the number of solid lead balls that would just fit the barrel/bore that it would take to make a pound. Thus lower numbers mean bigger diameter barrels. That in turn means they throw more lead down range. There once were 2 and 4 gauge shotguns, but they were shot from mounts on boats, not from the shoulder.
Here's a video of one in action.
What a hoot!
Not yet My Lady, not yet. There's a whole lot of us out here who are well armed, and take "support and defend against all enemies, foreign and domestic, very seriously indded.
And, tomorrow, July 5, I must buy a shotgun.....and I cry.
You should not. As an American, it is both your right and your DUTY to be armed. Regardless of the threat de jure, or lack thereof. (We wish!).
Well, in town or the 'burbs , but if your property is hundreds or thousands of acres, maybe not so much. Certainly a 100 or 200 would not be excessive. Might be that far to the barn or the well. How do you explain to an LEO that you felt your life was in danger when youve dropped an illegal alien almost two football fields away from your house?
"He was stealing my chickens/horses/cattle', etc. Or "there were 20 of 'em, coming towards the house, and they would not turn back when I yelled at them so go away." (Not all states require you to be in fear for your life, and Arizona is one that does not, although apparently the "stealing the livestock justification" might not be allowed there, but it would be in Texas. )
What President?
You mean the Usurper who is exercising the powers of the President? What did anyone expect of that Won?
I never thought about the M1 Carbine, but if you want to use it for self defense it might be a good idea to find some of the Cor Bon loadings meant for the 30 carbine. I think theyre called Pow’r Ball...but I could be wrong.
Dont cry, shotguns are fun. Watch Gunny Ermey’s shotgun episode of “Lock and Load” to find out how much fun they can be.
Thanks for the advice! ((((HUGS))))

Yea, but they're pretty expensive, and you are contemplating longer engagements with a long gun, so you need more than you would for a handgun. I have 1,000 rounds of soft point ammo for mine however. Better than ball, but not much more expensive.
